Air Max 90 Cracking Problems (Steve Nash & HUF)
Posted by Matt Halfhill | Aug 19, 2006

Lately, Nike has been doing alot of limited edition sneakers with the Air Max 90 rather than the usual suspects, the Air Force Ones and the Dunks. This was a great thing for many Air Max collectors since the Air Max 90 is a favorite amongst most.
A special edition HUF Air Max 90 was released only to super exclusive shops. This was not the first shoe that HUF and Nike colaborated on and nor was it part of the “HUFquake” pack, but the shoes thought they were. The problem with the shoes is that the paint on the midsoles crack only after light usage. We heard about the problems, but thanks to chiu_kee, we got photos.
This cracking problem was not only on the HUF Air Max 90s also on the “Canadian Exclusive” Steve Nash Air Max 90s. These were the first shoe Nike colaborated with Steve Nash on and turned out to be a really nice sneaker. Unfortunately, the midsoles crack on these as well. Worst of all, the color underneith is a light lime green. This makes it visible to virtually anyone walking by and makes the shoes look awful.
Currently, there are no Nike recalls that we know of. Sadly, due to the limited numbers and exclusivity of these Air Max 90s, many collectors paid BIG bucks and often over retail. Best word of advise for now is to pass on these shoes if you were considering buying them unless Nike re-releases them with the cracking problem fixed. Be sure to check out the 13 detailed pics we have showing the cracking Air Max 90s.

I FELL DAT!
Aug 19, 2006 at 8:25 pm
DAM,i got the steve Nashs already!!!
Aug 19, 2006 at 9:11 pm
Man this is really bad news I was thinking about coping the Air Max 90 Premium Fantastic 4, but after this fresh news update they can forget it, I will never purchase a pair ever of Air Max 90 ever ever. Damn right Nike needs to recall these shoes and for those customers who brought a pair I would be on the phone now with Niketown.com 800# letting them know what time it is Refund or credit towards your next purchase. I don’t know which news is worse the Air Max 90’s cracking or the price mark-up on the Thunder-N-Lightning Jordans 4’s bundle.
Aug 19, 2006 at 9:14 pm
nike told me to take them back to the store i got them from and they’ll send them back and refund my money. and mine cracked after an hour of wearing!
Aug 19, 2006 at 9:17 pm
Comment#3 I feel sorrow for you, MozambiQue because you have a pair, but keep ya head up and call niketown.com Asap. Them pictures could make a Sneakerhead cry if that’s what you have to look forward to with ya air max 90’s or any shoe.
Aug 19, 2006 at 9:34 pm
that same cracking happened on my ’95s and my ’97s. and they authentic. that doesnt just happen to the ’90s.
Aug 19, 2006 at 9:41 pm
i got a pair of all white Air Max 90s and i did notice small cracks in the midsole
i hope mine dont look like those:(
Aug 19, 2006 at 10:45 pm
Not all Air Max 90’s midsoles have this cracking problem. I have many pairs of Air Max 90s and my HOA Infrared Air Max 90s are just fine after 20 or so wearings.
So far, we only know of the HUF Air Max 90s and Nash Air Max 90s. I am very happy I found out about this because I was considering getting a pair of Nash 90s and I had the high bid on a pair of HUF 90s on eBay - needless to say, I cancelled my bid.
To clarify about the “cracking”, the midsole itself is not cracking like wearing a pair of OGs, the exterior paint is cracking from the stress of compression on the midsole. None-the-less, it looks horrible and should not happen on a pair of “premium” sneakers.
Aug 20, 2006 at 12:01 am
Philbil which Air Max 95’s did you have cracking with, I just ordered the Fantastic 4 Air Max 95 and I’m considering the Jamacia edition too, Please don’t let it be one of the two.
Aug 20, 2006 at 12:35 am
yea a lil tuff
Aug 20, 2006 at 1:53 am
forget all that the owner of those shoes had to be running in them or wearin them all the time for a shoe to do that cuz my air max’s still havent cracked after light usage!!!! the owner is lyin.
Aug 20, 2006 at 2:33 am
to the guy above…
i have several pairs of 90’s that have cracking issues…namely the brown footpatrol 90’s, and the HUF 90’s…and this is with CASUAL wear. namely walking around town, and daily walking to and from wherever i go.
before you condemn what you obviously DO NOT know, simply browse a few posts on ISS, niketalk, etc. and see the hundreds of examples of this problem.

READ THE POST!
It is not ALL Air Max 90s - it is just these two models.
Both of these shoes were only worn casually for just a couple hours - no one ran in these sneakers.
Aug 20, 2006 at 8:52 am
the mine were cracking after a few hours. BAD!
Aug 20, 2006 at 10:56 pm
i dont know what nike is gonna do with these shoes. i work for niketown atlanta and i havent heard anything about it.

Did you guys get the Nash 90s? I heard that some NT’s in the US got them which has pissed off a few ppl who paid alot to get them from Canada.
Aug 21, 2006 at 12:36 am
[...] Our friends at Nice Kicks have an interesting post about the problems many have had with their Air Max 90 limited edition kicks such as the Huf San Francisco Clerk Pack 90’s and the Steve Nash Canadian Exclusive Air Max 90’s. Interesting post. [...]
Aug 21, 2006 at 6:54 am
Mine steve nash come in this week i knew this i didn’t got them.
Does it help if i apply some leather protective cream on the midsole.
Aug 21, 2006 at 7:03 am
~TOMEKA~ the grey/orange ’95s and the metalic silver/ navy ’97s.
Aug 21, 2006 at 8:17 am
whoever has encountered this problem should take them back asap
thats poor workmanship on nikes part they probally used cheaper material in order to put more $ in the bank
thats jive^^^^^^^
Aug 21, 2006 at 10:31 am
Yeah we got the shoes and I got a pair. Wore them once with no bad cracking. Thinking about getting the last pair (on discount) and keeping it dead stock. I can’t wear an 8.5 so I won’t worry about the cracking. Might be worth it. 51 dollars…
Aug 21, 2006 at 10:37 am
My Nash’s did the same thing
Aug 21, 2006 at 11:28 am
yea there has been a lot of problems with theses shoes thats why it is hard for me to really buy shoes because i dont know the out turn of the shoe and because i moght pay alot for the shoe and it would be a waste of money when the shoe does not end up right so that why i really just wear air forces and the all but yall need to fix that problem so if yall have a comment to me yall can hit me up on my email at lilshella 2000 at yahoo.com thanks
Aug 21, 2006 at 11:33 am
ill never buy them thanks for putting me up on game ill tell everybody about it thanks
Aug 21, 2006 at 11:38 am
Air Max 90s have always had that problem, thats why i dont rock them.
Aug 21, 2006 at 11:45 pm
Well not all shoes are built to last… as a matter of fact i had to decided to wear my white and red tens for the fisrt time since i bought them a year ago and i had tripped over the stairs and the bottom sole started to come loose! I was like dam and now its like which is better, buying a fake shoe or a real one cuz it seems to me nike is only thinking about quanity and
not quality
Aug 22, 2006 at 2:21 am
i`m a am90 collector and had the problem only with the first retros way back when they starting to bring them am90`s out aggain. after a couple of pairs nike fixed the problem. i do not know why it happend aggain. it`s a shame for those $150.- bucks and over shoes.
Aug 22, 2006 at 9:34 am
I think that yall need to quit nagging about some shoes. What shoe doesnt mess up. Yall taking pictures of the same two shoes. In that case air force ones bend up after about 2 weeks wear it just all depends on how u take care of your shoes.
Aug 22, 2006 at 9:35 am
Most of yall probably lying anyway
Aug 22, 2006 at 9:47 am
“I think that yall need to quit nagging about some shoes. What shoe doesnt mess up. Yall taking pictures of the same two shoes. In that case air force ones bend up after about 2 weeks wear it just all depends on how u take care of your shoes.” - Dough-Girl Magic
These shoes were worn casually for only 2 hours by someone who only weighs 165 lbs.
The purpose of this post was not to show what can happen to sneakers if you wear them, its to show how these were defective and to alert any sneakerheads who might consider purchasing them to think again.
Aug 22, 2006 at 1:15 pm
I have to agree too.
The same goes for the Premium ‘Clerks’(teal & bone).
I was in the market for the ‘HUFs’ but now i gotta re-consider..
Anyone know if the same goes for the ‘Mr. Fantastics’ and ‘DQM-Bacons’??
I’m highly disappointed ’bout this. I wonder if this is a sign of what’s to come with these colabo packs…hope not..

“Anyone know if the same goes for the ‘Mr. Fantastics’ and ‘DQM-Bacons’??” - E.Fraz
I have not heard of any cracking on the Mr. Fantastics and definately not the DQM Bacons. Both are amazing sneakers and are up there on my list of favorite Air Max 90s.
I’m glad to hear that our article helped protect you from getting a pair of defective sneakers.
Aug 22, 2006 at 4:18 pm
what do you think a dead stock steve nash shoe is worth now?
Aug 22, 2006 at 4:45 pm
Now thats sum BS
Aug 22, 2006 at 5:58 pm
“what do you think a dead stock steve nash shoe is worth now?” - Alexander
In my book hardly anything given the fact that if you wear them 1 or 2 times they will look like ass. They will have SOME value still, but probably to people who don’t know about the problem.
Aug 22, 2006 at 6:29 pm
i just bought a pair of 90’s
Aug 22, 2006 at 10:12 pm
yea i got Mr Fantastic Air Max 90’s And They are crackin a lil bit i worn them like 5 or 6 times but mines dont look no where near the way those look up there……..1
Aug 23, 2006 at 12:18 am
realistic thinking makes me wonder… how many times did y’all plan on wearing them? i’ve worn mine once… and i got them the day they launched.
i noticed the creasing in the toe before the cracking, even though my cracking is not at all noticeable.
i wont wear mine again because of this issue, but i maybe planned on wearing them three times… just like the mars blackmons.
now both shoes are in the closet full of socks so that they stay looking right.
maybe that’s just me
Aug 23, 2006 at 12:24 am
Damn I copped them, a week or two ago, now i dont know if i should wear them and find out or just leave them there, i think ill wait and see what nike does …. at least i got them for 90 cash
Aug 23, 2006 at 3:18 pm

Aug 24, 2006 at 6:13 pm
Damn, I’ve got the HUF and the NASH… I don’t have wear them and now I’m affraid to thinkin about seeing them cracking… I don’t know what to do with these 2 pairs. If someone know how to do (I’m from France)
Aug 25, 2006 at 2:15 am
now im kinda affraid to wear my steve nash’s……i think nike should atleast fix the problem even if they cant give us r money back!!
Aug 25, 2006 at 3:42 am
call nike and they have a return center to send shoes to,that will evaluate the problem, if they see it to be no fault of your own they will give you a merchandise credit voucher or replacement shoes. i called but not for these shoes.
Aug 25, 2006 at 9:46 pm
those r cool
Aug 27, 2006 at 7:01 pm
Yup got the same prob wit my hufs and Im only 65kgs and I’m definantly not hard on shoes.
Also watch out for Footpatrol Stabs cracking around the air bubble and forefoot area. Mine did, its freekin ugly and know of others who it happened to as well.
Problem is compression and the only way to deal with it is having the sole moulded in the final colour!!!
Aug 29, 2006 at 12:11 am
man almost bought these this past weekend!!
Sep 3, 2006 at 4:34 pm
I got The nash’s 2 weeks ago I worn them 2 days and the green things appeared…….
Sep 3, 2006 at 10:51 pm
we need to all call nike. i called the other day and dude was super cool, but he said this is the first hes heard of the cracking.so many people dont wear there shoes, that they’ll never even know. yeah i wore my nashes and they started cracking after 3 hours,,,if we all call,,maybe they’ll get a recall and replace em with some non-cracking ones,,cause at this point the shoes are useless
Sep 9, 2006 at 1:39 am
I bought a pair of Nash’s a couple of weeks ago here in Australia for about $135 U.S and I’ve worn them around the house for about ten minutes and small signs of cracking are already showing. I probably won’t wear them until they get recalled or else if anyone has suggestions to reduce cracking?
Also my girlfriend has a pair of white and pink leather 90s with the gold sparkly snakeskin on the side and hers have cracked pretty badly, similar to the pictures above and she would have worn them casually for less than ten hours.
My Infrareds have held up well and haven’t cracked yet after about 12-15 hourse of casual wear. But I’ve got a pair of Rejuvenation 90s and they’re cracking a bit.
So I think that while most 90s made in the last year or so are subject to cracking it must be a very sub standard paint they’re using on 90s that have been released in the last few months that’s causing major cracking.
I agree that Nike should definitely fix this and make these expensive ‘Premium’ editions with better quality materials.
Sep 15, 2006 at 6:34 pm
Does anyone know how to reduce the cracking?? shoe protectant or anything, hit me up
Sep 19, 2006 at 1:55 am
I hate to say it but I have the same problems with my air max 90’s. I was thinking about copping some exclusives at NIKE ID but I would hate to feel played after a couple of wears. Nike step your game up, I’m sure this problem can be fixed.
Sep 19, 2006 at 12:51 pm
Yeah, I got the Huf ones and they started cracking after the first time I rocked ‘em. Luckily I don’t wear them too often.
Sep 23, 2006 at 2:44 am
My red white and black air max’s cracked 2nd week!
Oct 1, 2006 at 10:54 pm

Dec 27, 2006 at 8:31 pm
I think I might have devised a solution to this problem, but I have yet to test my theory. I just bought a pair of HUF today, the paint on the midsole isn’t very nicely painted to begin with. Anyhow, first thing I did to the shoes were to paint the midsole portions with Testors Acrylic paint in clear gloss color (something that you can buy at the hobby shop, btw I build models as a hobby). I am going to do 3 light coats and wear it tomorrow and see if I will have a problem. The theory being, the clear coat of paint would hold the original paint structure intact, minimizing the cracking problem. I’ll report back in a week’s time.

May 16, 2007 at 8:44 pm
i got mine and have had them for a week, i wear them all the time and their fine. You just have to take care of them. When you rub you shoe againsed soemthing thats when the pain scraches off.
Jul 26, 2007 at 10:31 am
damn man i got the air maz 90′z in grey n blck n white. They got cracked after 2 years.Dat aint badd ya’ll!
Sep 4, 2007 at 10:42 am
I looked after mine as if they were my new-born and they still cracked!!! And im a light-weight guy as well. Its a manufacturing problem and suprisingly Nike dont seem to give a s–t! They still get their money.
So maybe we should boycott this shoe. although I am finding it very tough as they keep making baging new designs!
Oct 13, 2007 at 1:05 pm
i got my hufs like 6 months ago and they start cracking the first day, i was pissed, now i dont even care for them. i even played football in them before.

Apr 3, 2008 at 1:01 pm
aye, same happened to my 90’s within days of buying them, apart from that they seem to be very hardwearing but they should be without any exceptions for the price we’re having to fork out!

my untold truth nike air max 90 cracked
Oct 12, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Here are the guidelines for buying Air Max 90’s. I know this from experience I own a pair of the black gator skin reflector 90’s. White midsoles on air max 90’s are completely worthless. If they get scuffed even slightly, when you try to wipe it off, with or without professional cleaner it smears into the paint and becomes worse. Over time, cleaning your white midsoles wears down the paint/rubber and it becomes an extremely ugly yellow and peels/cracks off. I strongly recommend avoiding white midsoles on the 90’s either buy a different color or get some LTDs or Wrights. I speak the truth. Peace.
