Nike Air Penny II Retro
Posted by Matt Halfhill | Jun 16, 2008 A few scanned catalog shots and samples have been floating around the web, but at last we have official pics of the upcoming Nike Air Penny II retros. This fall two of the three original colorways will make their way back to the public and not a minute too soon. It has been almost 12 years since the shoes first released for the 1996-97 season.
To promote the shoe a series of “Lil Penny” commercials were as nearly as enjoyable as Spike’s Jordan commercials with the added comedy of Chris Rock being the voice over of Lil Penny. This time around you’ll have to catch the commercials on YouTube when the Penny II retros release in October (Black/Varisty Royal) and November (White/Varsity Royal). MSRP is set for $140 and for those with big feet (and concerned), they will release up to size 15. Check out shots of the shoes and in action on Penny’s feet after the jump. it has been 10 yrs now since i had the chance of playing in these COOL penny shoes. unfortuntely, i could not afford to buy me a pair during these hard times…One of the BEST BASKETBALL SHOES EVER!!! i envy you guys…got some extra size 10 pair?

I loved this shoe a long time ago and will cope myself another pair for sure, these were the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.

Normaly i wouldn’t get a retro of something that isn’t Jordan. But in this case I must make an exception. These are the flyest things since Marty McFLY!!!! I need them. Both colors. And unlike most sneakerheads, I’m using them “sole”-y for playing basketball. To me, buying a pair of basketball shoes and not using them for basketball is like buying a shirt that you’re never going to wear or buying a book that you’re not going to read. These are sweet!!!!

Yeah, Matt, I’d love to see some of those styles again.
One of the MAIN retro kicks I’d like to see again, missed out on them the first time retroed are the Reebok Pump Bringback that Dominique Wilkins spoorted. Love those a lot. I should really start utilizing eBay more for past retros, instead of newer stuff.
I was actually on there a week ago, looking for Some Ewing lows and the Ewing highs. Those lows remind me a lof the Jordan II low.
That’s funny you mention that Mike quote though, from his XX3 commercial, because Penny didn’t get all the seasonal accolades and things of that nature, but his line of signature shoes are pretty high in the kicks world.

There is a poster or pic that I have seen that has mj in those black and white penny’s from back in the days and mj were number 12 when somebody went into the locker room and stole his jersey. I believe that was the story.

Subpar???? Its pretty much over LOL! But like I said, I saw him play at Treadwell, Memphis State(UofM now) and all thru his NBA career and the guy was on his way….

Classics Matt. Here is a trivia question for you do you remember the Nike’s that both Penny and Air Jordan wore in the 1995 playoffs. The Nike was the shoe that MJ wore for 1 game because he was fined for wearing the 11’s in the white and black when the rest of the team were wearing black shoes. He ended up switching intio the shoe we ended up knowing as the space jam the next game but there was one game in the 1995 playoffs (the year that he came back just in time for the playoffs from baseball)that he wore a Nike shoe.

For some strange reason, the White pair was the only pair of Penny II’s to have the Penny logo on the side. Both the Black/Varsity Royal and White/Atlantic Blue had the swoosh.
I can assure you that if they changed any logos tons of heads would catch feelings like with the Nike Air / Jumpman issue.

Words can’t describe how happy I am to see the Penny II’s return. Call me crazy (or just weird), but I am also desperate to see the Penny IIIs come back as well. I recently traded a pair of DS white on whites for a pretty worn pair, but I would really like to see Nike bring those back.
Isn’t it ironic though that Penny, who had somewhat of a disappointing career compared to what many thought he would have had, has some of the most sought after kicks?!

I really hate the those white/black ones.
The white/blue Penny II should’ve been released, instead of those.

Gonna cop both for sure. I had the the 1st original colorway (white/varsity royal) back in ‘96 when I was freshman in high school. These were sick back then and I can’t wait for them to come out in Nov. and Dec.

Easy cop (x2). I’m from Memphis and saw Penny in high school, college, and professional ball so I gotta keep a deadstock pair even if they are retros.
Hate his career succumbed to injuries though. He was very marketable for Nike and the NBA.

I remember in the not so long ago past the OG’s were going for 4&5 bills on ebay and now the come with the retros LOL. Wish i had kept my OG’s but i will be scooping these up when they hit town.
