Team USA Logo Controversy

Nike just released photos of the US Olympic Basketball team, but there has been a little bit of controversy spreading online about the placement of Dwight Howard’s hand and Coach K’s foot. Dwight Howard is the only USA Team member who is signed with a non-Nike affiliated brand. Those are the facts, but with any controversy all that matters are opinions. Do you think that Nike, being the official sponsor of the USA Olympic Team and host of this photo shoot, intentionally placed Dwight Howard where he is with Coach K’s foot obstructing his foot to block the Adidas logos? You make the call after the jump. |

ok the only thing that is unclear is if his hand is blockin the nike logo because addidas wanted him too.. or if its just a coinkydink cuz i doubt nike would want to block their own logo..the shoe is understandable but not their own logo
if it was addidas idea..than we have a nice little battle goin on between the top two sneaker brands.

There are contract stipulations for Howard from Adidas possibly.That’s why he covers the NIKE logo on the shorts. Of course NIKE ain’t gone let that sneaker in the shot

Oh yeah, in reference to some past comments, about MJ, etc. and a few 1992 Dream Teamers “covering a logo†by draping the American flag over their shoulder during the medal presentation - I watched some old games, on YouTube just because I’ve been feeling a little itch for ‘92 basketball (thanks to Slam’s Olympic ‘08 magazine) Jordan and other Nike athletes didn’t cover up any logos, due to contract and business issues.
There was no logo on the warm-ups to be covered.

It’s like this: Did Nike do this on purpose? Yes. But should you be pissed at them for it? No. I mean, that would be like someone showing you how to make more money and then telling you not to do it. The fact of the matter is we give Nike the power to do stuff like this. By buying thier products as much and as often as we do, we’re supporting sweat shops, we’re drastically raising the price of sneakers, we’re letting Nike intentionally keep demand high. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not a martyr. I’ve got an easy 70 pairs of retros and originals and I’m still gonna run out and grab the next pair. And so are you. Let’s just not kid ourselves. That’s why the call us addicts.

Same deal as Jordan on the original Dream Team, If you look @ any pictures tooken, MJ always covered the champion logo. When you are endorsed, you are passing off goodwill for promotions of makers products. The logo must be fully visible to show good will (which In Howard’s case, you do not see the full Nike Logo, but instead a side view). When the original dream team won gold, there were allot of athletes with american flags draped over their sweatsuits, not because of their patriotism, but because it would violate terms & conditions. Imagine Jordan wearing a champion sweatsuit while placing around a gold medal around his neck.

JumpmanJr., the type of ball Howard is holding isn’t at question, it’s the fact that the way Howard is holding his hand, is obstructing the view of the Nike swoosh on his shorts, possibly in retaliation to Nike wanting Coach K’s foot in front of his Adidas kicks; OR due to the fact he’s an Adidas athlete…
Which makes much more sense.

and to respond to niko bellic i believe that the olympic team is sorta like baseballs all- star game the fans still have a say in the matter, but for those of you who are too young to remember in 1992 barcelona isaiah thomas ( who happened to be a better player than coach ever) was nominated to play on the dream team. jordan allegedly threatned to pull out if isaiah played,(jordan and isaiah had a beef going on for years) with the jordan threat, nike, coca cola ,mcdonalds, and mars/m&m’s who all sponsored jordan said they would stand behind him, and also pull out and that meant a lot of lost $$$$$$ for the olympic games, the i.o.c (international olympic commitee) and the everyone and everything connected to the olympics the city of barcelona included . isaiah thomas was suspiciously dumped from dream team usa, and the rest is history. so think about that niko

being that what is being promoted is afterall basketball we are all a shoe community and we self-proclaimed “sneakerheads” nike knows that the eye is gonna shoot straight to what has become the most essential piece of equiptment in basketball, i’ll give you a hint it isn’t the basketball. to coin a catch=phrase “it’s the shoes”. being said after years of marketing nike understands their consumers, they know that “we” the collective sneaker community doesn’t really care about kobe, kidd, lebron, wade, paul melo, etc… except for what they are wearing on their feet. through aggresive and strategic marketing sneaker companies i.e nike has transferred the talent of the player and has equated it to the shoe. remember those jordan ads? ” it’s gotta be the shoe” so the consumer feels that they can be “like mike” if they wore his shoes. in the advent of his- airness absence from the game we the consumer have transferred the same feeling we felt for jordan and placed our faith in the “shoe” whatever shoe it may be. nike is protecting their brand, they sell and boy do they sell shoes, but worldwide soccer is a bigger sport and worldwide adidas rules the shoe game. if you doubt my theory on shoe conditioning just take note the next time when you are out in public, if you see someone who catches your eye do you find yourself checking to see what kinda shoes they are rocking? do you tend to judge their style or lack of style depending on their shoe game? hmmmm? just a lil food for thought.

This may be clear product and advertising placement to block out the shoes that dwight be sporting cause they adidas. but still his hand is covering the nike swoosh on his shorts but the swoosh on his jersey is still showing they could have had him turned like bosh so you couldnt see the swoosh on the shorts either so im not quite sure whats going on???

It is definately somethign done on purpose. With the exception of Wade and Kid, the whole line appears to be going in height order. Chris Bosh here is standing taller than Howard, but he is placed where Coach K can block his shoe.

I do not see what the huge deal is, to me if you look at the pic they are standing in descending order according to height, Dwight just happens to be the tallest within the pecking order. So I do not really think this a big deal, Somebody probably saw the photo and wanted to start a controversy about it. And if Nike has such a hand within the olympic basketball team, why not just have picked Nike sponsored athletes only?

Nike used to make NBA jerseys until sponsorship contract ended. I think learned of better ways to cover competition logos since they slipped up and forgot to blur out the reebok logo in the Leave Nothing commercials with LT, Merriman, and, Jackson. But like everyone else has said, its a business move. How would Nike look if they were to show Howard’s shoes and still allow him to cover the Swoosh on his shorts? He doesn’t have the Swoosh on his jersey covered because a) it would look corny, b) its not that noticeable, even though you can still make out that it is a Swoosh and c) he doesn’t have a third arm to do so.
How come the same question about why the Converse, LeBron, and, Jordan logo aren’t covered up? Don’t people see that other people beat them to the stupid question? Come on people READ before you ask the stupid questions.

first off the lack of knowledge shown these so called sneakerheads is disappointing.. JB ( Jordan Brand for all you slow heads) is owned by Nike it is not an affiliation.. Go back and look at OG (original) jordans you will see the nike swoosh logo… And for the last time converse is owned by Nike… Now on to the topic of debate coach K covering up D.Howard’s shoe is deliberate… As a business you do not promote your competition!!! On to D.Howard covering up the swoosh on his shorts also deliberate because as an adidas athlete he is not supposed to be seen or photographed wearing the competitions gear.. This is the same reason josh smith would not be in the stepped on my j’s video you can go onto youtube and search for behind the scenes footage of the video shoot where JD actually calls josh smith to come down to the video shoot… The reason the swoosh on his jersey is not covered is because it is not Nike’s responsibilty to cover up their own logo on non Nike athletes for Nike sponsored events… Also if dwight would have covered up the swoosh on his jersey it would have made the pic look that more ridiculous..

knowing how nike is about their players and marketing they completely did that on purpose especially in the case of dwight howard being that he is sighed to their biggest competitor in adidas. i think they left the swoosh on him jersey alone because there was no slick way to cover it up so, they left it because its such a minut thing to see…you can see the frustation in Howard’s face about them probably hassling him about it.

Bottom line. Dwight Howard pulled a reverse block on Nike, he knew Nike was going to block his sneakers, so he blocked the logo on his shorts without them noticing it before they released the picture. Nike doesn’t own the USA team, they simply sponsor the team. Since the picture is from Nike, they have the right to block any competition they want.

Well, you can still see the Nike swoosh on Dwight’s jersey but the coach blocking his sneakers is very obvious to me. Dwight blocking the Nike symbol is not that big of a deal but his sneakers getting block by th coach (hmmm I wonder what sneaker/shoes he is wearing… probably Nike’s lol)
Its all business, although if I were Nike, I wouldn’t go there. If we run things, then we run things. So what adidas has a place on the floor. Since Nike basically TOOK OVER the whole team and event, it shouldn’t try so hard to block (even with a not so obvious way) out adidas.
Oh and another thing, it could be possible that adidas wanted there sneakers blocked and asked for it. Who knows. Companies are so sensitive when it comes to there marketing (and money).

NIKE released the pictures. There is no way they would release a picture which showed a rival brand’s sneaker… They probably told Dwight this and he agreed with the whole ‘foot placement’ thing as a solution, because under his contract with Adidas he also can’t be seen wearing a Nike shoe. I still think D Howard is covering that Nike Swoosh on his shorts to show loyalty to his brand and maybe Adidas told him to. I remember when Jordan was retiring, T Mac said he wanted to wear J’s during Jordan’s last all-star to pay homage but because he was under contract with Adidas he couldn’t. It’s obvious that Nike still wanted to show the world that they are the big dog by showing the Nike logo on D Howard’s chest. They tried to cover it up by also have C Paul facing frontward. I have no issues with what they did it’s clearly just smart marketing because technically the Nike Swoosh on Howard’s jersey is not clearly visible but everyone knows what it is.

It is completely astonishing how ignorant some of you NiceKicks readers seem to be. Common sense is such a weird little thing, some have it and some don’t.
Without any fancy words, the world knows you can’t handle those, Nike would be promoting Adidas if they allowed D. Howard to show his shoes and the Hand covering the Nike sign is just because of him holding the ball. Nike would not cover up their own logo. The reason the logo on the chest is visable is because it is their, Nike’s, own logo. For them to cover the chest logo would seperate him completely from the uniformed team.
I am not really to sure why this is such an issue to some of you. I am guessing most of the readers are children, probably between the ages of 12-16, those that haven’t been educated much in business and/or promoion or marketing.
Relax though, you will be ok. Nike will continue to run things and still make things for you to talk about.

Nike has sponsorship for the team uniform, that does not neccessarily have to do with shoes. Jordan is produces through Nike but is its own brand. Converse is owned by Nike and was baught out. They operate as their own entity but still Nike see’s parts of that. Stop making simple shyt so difficult. YES the photo was done on purpose.

Converse is owned by Nike
Adidas is NOT owned by Nike and the one pair of Adidas shoes is covered. That’s what the controversy is about. I would really like to hear about why Dwight Howard has his hand over the Nike logo on his shorts.
Knowing Nike and how smart they are, this was all planned for us to spend time talking about them.

although i could deff see nike doing something like that but i think we might be lookin too much into it cuz like they go from tallest to shortest so how would they have blocked the sneakers if he was in the middle, and like someone above said how come they dont have him blocking the logo on his jersey
