First Look: Air Jordan True Flight
Posted by Matt Halfhill | Aug 29, 2008 Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have retro Air Jordans updated to perform to today’s standards? What if your favorite Jordan shoe that came out in 1992 could perform on the court as though it was designed with the pallet of today’s technology? Michael Jordan was the greatest that ever lived, but performance wise, many of his shoes have been out shined by the advancing technology that comes year after year.
Jordan Brand will be doing just that coming in January of next year with the introduction of the Air Jordan True Flight. This shoe clearly looks much like the Air Jordan 7 but is updated wish a flatter sole with herringbone traction for a better grip and Zoom Air for higher performance cushioning. Some blurry catalog scans have leaked, but these shoes deserve to be seen properly for a first impression. The Air Jordan True Flight will take off January 17th for $140. The concept of a retro Jordan with the performance of today’s has been a hope of mine for quite a few years. While the thought and concept of the Air Force 25 was solid, the marketing and execution wasn’t what I hoped to see. I applaud Jordan Brand for taking on this task while maintaining the integrity of the design of the shoe and keeping the upgrades in performance most noticeable to those putting the shoes to the test on the court. DEFINITE cop, I know these are gonna be sold out though still. I was thinking the same thing, it was only a matter of time before Nike / JB started making their Retro releases more modern to keep up with today’s changing sneaker technology. They need to make different variations of more models like the 5 instead of wasting material and money on their corniest marketing gimmick by far: Fusions.

these shoes are great, OLDJUMPMAN i dont know what you are talking about, overall i think the comments are positive.
NICEKICKS made the point that if jb wants to stay in business past 5 years from now they have got to “recreate” themselves so to speak. that could mean updating a classic, or maybe trying a little harder to design flagship sneakers the likes of their first 15 or so years in existence. not fusions, and retros well you can only retro a shoe so many times you know.
thumbs up on these for the effort, idea, and it is a step in the right direction.

I am very surprised to hear what many “shoe heads” are saying, especially the positive reactions to this particular shoe. I had many J’s growing up, I am old enough to have had them when they originally released, including the Air Jordan I.
However, PRICING is not on par with the industry. I am sorry to say that, especially since I am a Jordan Head. HYPERDUNKS are in a serious lead over these, no doubt about it. Let’s not ignore this.

I know that JB is going a little different, but I would like to see retros like the V, my favorite, with some lunar foam and maybe internal flywire, and a stronger heel counter and better traction, without compromising the integrity of the design, or in other words, keeping the look the exact same. But I think this new modified retro is the cunning and daring approach to shoes that put Jordans on the map in the first place.

wooooww…what i’ve dreamed of for quite some time jordans i can play basketball that still look good…jb took a big step in the rite direct…fix the 11’s and we might be on to something. I like how jb repositioned the outer cage of the seven on this. it looks like it has much more strutural rigidity. That was the first thing to go in the seven’s i played in. after about 2 hard games they were so uncomfortable but these look like they could stand the time of time…and i love the zoom air the seven were qiute harsh in the feet and made with such thin material that you had no foot protection. I’m so in love with these you have no idea. i love the 7’s so far as looks go but they were a terrible shoe to play in and this has solved that

Finally I’ve been hoping for this type of shoe by JB for a while they are finally figuring out that you can release a quality basketball shoe without the super ridiculous bells and whistle designs that define basketball shoes of now . All it takes is a clean silhouette, great cushioning superb traction , and enough padding to keep your feet from sweating a lot and bam an istant classic

i like the fact that jb is trying i mean most brands stick their bread and butter i mean yuh nike af25 as far as an update to the af1 which in my mind if its good enough for sheed to play a whole season in the old high ankle version(and lets remember thats 82 PROFESSIONAL games)then why cant any play pick up a reto which as you pointed out was good for mike, and ball in them? i mean ive seen high school and street kids take their brand new reto’s and ball in them.
i understand that technology has advanced and we can build the perfect shoe for the next big thing coming out of high school

The definition of hybrid: one of mixed origins or composition. So therefore this shoe is a hybrid. Mixing today’s new cushioning systems with an old shoe/shoe style. So all the shoeheads out there hating on the other hybrids that Brand Jordan has put out so far, but yet liking this shoe and the idea behind it, you guys are straight up hypocrites!

i guess once you set the standards in the shoe game, it’s hard to duplicate sucess (hence the retro sucess). jordan brand needs to do exactly this, upgrade material(s), new color scheme, and most importantly make them as comfortable as posibble. i personally like where this is heading, hope jb doesn’t dissapoint with upcoming releases.

Jordan Brand, if they want to exist in 5 years, can’t continue to release retro, after retro, after retro. Also, the retro Jordans need much more than higher grade materials and different cushioning to perform to today’s standards.
Nike gave a presentation for the Flywire technology showing how a shoe held the persons foot with and without Flywire. The shoe they used for this example? The Jordan XI. I think that we have a LOT to look forward to.
I am amazed and happy to see all of the comments and overwhelmingly positive reaction to the shoes. Jordan Brand has to create products that perform to last in the market. The brand was built by the best performer in the league - the shoes must do the same.

ok i love the 7 they r my fav jordan sneakers i have all of the 7s but the red stitching on this make it look fake as hell and y don’t the real retro 7 don’t have the bulls colors. and do this ‘new’ 7″S du the fit like the old ones they better - the back of this ‘new’ 7″S should look like the old 7″s but whit a jordan logo please take the red stitching out and the white part make it black and the Grey arrow make it white

Ah guys, I know many are excited about this concept but lets be serious. Hyperdunks are $30 cheaper, and may even be superior to these in terms of performance.
Sorry, I too am a Jordan head but Nike has a monster with the Hyperdunks. JB has to get better pricing!

If JB wants to create a sneaker for “balling” using classic silhouettes, why not just make retros with “tougher materials” available to the public? The shoe is innovative, yes, but in reference to columbiaj’s analogy, the look of the classic (shoe or car) will always be better than it’s modernized immitation. If its not broke don’t fix it (the silhouette), but if its outdated, update it (the performance)! Great idea, keep up the good work.

I would prefer the stitching to be black, but I’m on board with this idea. These shoes aren’t made for rocking in the streets that’s what the “retro” and “lifestyle” brands are for. But for folks that actually want to rock Jordan’s old school style J’s to play basketball in, this is what we’ve been waiting for. Although, I have to question starting with the 7, since I feel like that shoe is already on point with the tech (it’s my favorite performance J except its ankle support is quite flimsy IMHO). But definitely the AJ1 through AJ6 need some modern twists.

I’m all for innovation & the re-make of a classic, and I’m happy to see the VII chosen as the first to be updated, as it’s design was obviously far ahead of it’s time.
I don’t really like the tounge, though. I think JB needs to keep to their roots without going overboard on stuff. There wasn’t any need for that “V” like patch on the tounge, just stick a nice fat Jumpan by itself, ala AJ3 style…and it makes me happy.

That’s a TERRIBLE “nickname” for them to have, considering the fact that the Raptors (as a team) weren’t even in anyone’s thought process, when they originally released.

It’s got it’s positives and negatives…
At first glance, it’s like ‘Oh no, not again!’ But the more you look at them and study them, it gets a little bit better.
Positive #1: The heavy influence from the 7.
That’s sure to bring in buyers.
Positive #2: They didn’t just throw the design and shoe into the “Fusion Class.”
Positive #3: That sole reminds me of today’s cars, with the futuristic, sharp lines on the body. It’s like a steroid filled version of the 7.
Negative #1: As with any shoe, the possibility of it being faked and made in 15 trillion different colorways. I’m sure this one can be done easily.
Negative #2: There’s a lot going on with the side of the shoe. So hopefully they don’t do too much inverted stitching on the sides.
I’ll keep my eyes peeled on these. Don’t screw this up JB.

i work in a sneaker store, and let me tell you, these are going to go just as fast as retros, for two reasons:
1. they are much higher cut than most J’s that have been released in the last couple of years
2. other than the countdown packs, there is no way most people will be able to get the retros

Great choice to start this series. These were futuristic looking when they came out back in 92, so instead of looking like a complete redesign, it’s more like a souped-up version of the original. I can’t wait to see where they take this concept with the 5s.

I can’t describe how happy I am to see this and where this concept could be taken. Jordan has made tons of money off of the lifestyle market, but lets be honest, Michael Jordan was the dominant force on the court and so should his shoes.
The Air Jordan series (#’d, 2009, 2010, etc) will always be at the top, but I am happy to see that there will be more high performance shoes in the lineup than the flagship model.
I can only dream where things could go with this….Full length Zoom Air in the Jordan 11? Better traction and cushioning in the Jordan 5? This is just what this brand needs in my personal opinion.
