Straight to Outlets? Air Jordan Flipsyde
Posted by Matt Halfhill | Aug 19, 2008 When I first heard of Jordan Brand making a skate shoe, my mouth nearly hit the floor. A Jumpman affixed to a skateboarding shoe violates virtually every rule in branding. While I expected the shoe to hit outlets, I didn’t anticipate it to see the shoe arrive almost immediately after the release.
Like another Direct-to-DVD installment of American Pie, the Jordan Flipsyde has hit outlets fully stocked of what should be a mistake to never be repeated. Jordan stands for many things - excellence on the court, domination of the competition, pulling off the unthinkable, but never have I associated ollies and kick flips with the G.O.A.T. |

Aug 20, 2008 at 4:35 pm
They should have made air jordan 3 “SB”(same design extra padding) also air jordan 2 “SB” the jordan 2 already got da fat tounge and everything ya feel me

i think this idea could be well executed.
jb just needs some direction in design.
All it is, is a hustle. Nike went out on a limb starting a skateboarding line first try it failed, second try it brought them great success. I still say it a good idea just not a good shoe.
i skate, and i’d love to rock some jays while i shred without looking like a poser lol. Anyway.. i hope this doesn’t discourage jb from starting a sb line.
i heard they were suppose to sign stevie williams. kinda similar to when nike signed p-rod..
Aug 20, 2008 at 11:51 am
Yeah i was just in an outlet lookin around and i saw these and thought didn’t these just come out ?
Aug 20, 2008 at 11:10 am
I said it would happen and it did. NIKE, take notes from what yall did with the SB line. Do a AJ1 SB, maybe a AJ3 SB and call it a day. Those would sell out like the Nike SB’s do now. Kids use to skate those 2 shoes right there. Give them an Air Zoom sole, SB laces and some fat tounge’s. Bam!!! Stop playing yourself!!!

Once again I say it, Jordan Brand never came out with a decent shoe of its own other than the Air Jordans (though the 6 rings does kind of change that). The fact that JB even exists as a separate entity is a joke.
Aug 20, 2008 at 1:58 am
WHAT, YOU MEAN THAT’S NOT A BLACK FUSION 3…? DAMN…!
Aug 20, 2008 at 12:50 am
RETROES ONLY D*** thats all nuttin more and o yeah some jumpmans
Aug 19, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Easy Pass! Keep this stuff up and i can see the E THS or the Where are they Now! Is anyone paying attention at Nike and Jordan Read the Comments!
Aug 19, 2008 at 8:07 pm
You see, this is EXACTLY why i’m leaving JB…..lol
Aug 19, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Hahahahahahhahaha!!! That’s what U get…sorry had to let that out
Aug 19, 2008 at 7:19 pm
I knew they wouldn’t sell, but I thought it was an OK idea. They already have shoes outside of the basketball genre, so why not go towards skating also.
Aug 19, 2008 at 7:09 pm
bad idea from jordan and ugly shoe
Aug 19, 2008 at 6:39 pm
what did they expect: for it to sell like XX3s? Trash.
Aug 19, 2008 at 6:31 pm
I guess this is where we ALL should say: “I told you so, JB! But your dumb asses just WOULDN’T LISTEN!”
This what should be happening with the Fusions, but so many IDIOTS, oops sorry, I mean people, are buying them. (not really sorry either)
JB still probably won’t scrap the idea of the Flipsyde. They’ll just go back and make changes, to try and make it “consumer friendly” for skaters and nonskaters, by making it appeal to both (skaters AND hoopers). Not gonna work, either way you slice it.
Aug 19, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Lol, I actually thought this line was going to do something for Jordan Brand, guess this back to the drawing board..
Aug 19, 2008 at 4:34 pm
believe it or not skateboarders say that the Jordan 1 is one of the best skate shoes ever made and i saw that in Transworld
Aug 19, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Something is wrong here…Eventhough the kicks were sent straight to the outlets the price is only $10 below retail ($79 instead of $89)…The local spot by me was actually doing well selling them because kids thought they were catching a deal, JB might be having the last laugh…Before you cop check the box it might not be as much of a deal as you think….On anotha note I actually tried them on and they are kinda comfortable…I think if they keep trying they might get it right…..Maybe $40 I would cop some beaters..

haha illegitimate son of jays right there
Aug 19, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Terrell,
I know what you are saying about Jordan shoes being used for skating, heck my brother in law showed me pics of him skating in his black/blue OG Jordan Is.
I just think that there is a major difference between a shoe that skateboarders choose to utilize as a skate shoe and a brand that chooses to create a shoe to go after a market.
There is a low top Jordan I coming with the padded tongue that is skate ready, but that to me even isn’t very authentic. In the days that Jordans were used to skate in, puffy tongues were not in any shoe. Like you said, it was just vulcanized sole, leather and canvas top All Stars and Vans.
Possibly the idea was there to pay homage to early day skaters like Caballero, but we can only speculate that in fact was the direction of this project as there has not been any information released supporting that.
Aug 19, 2008 at 3:40 pm
To Terrell,
Yes, they have been used and I respect that, heard of 1’s being great for skating back then.
But, for Jordan Brand to CONSCIOUSLY create a skateboarding shoe, sort of defaces the Jordan name in a way. He has nothing whatsoever to do with skating.
Aug 19, 2008 at 3:35 pm
To me, I think that it was a great idea, but poorly executed in the final product. To terrell, way to mention caballero - he’s one of my favorite old-school skaters. I also would have to second Terrell’s idea in Jordan brand branching out and collaborating (possibly) with some other well-known labels.

Before there were skate brands like DC, Airwalk, Circa, Nike SB etc. There was just nike, all-stars and vans. Air Jordans were commonly used as skate shoes.
On i believe a 1985-86 Thrasher magazine cover Skateboarding great/pioneer Steve Caballero can be seen wearing a pair of black and red Air Jordan I’s. (see Thrashers Archives)
Same as in one of my favorite skate movies the search for animal chen at least one of those cats is shredding in Jays. They gripped like dunks do and were comfortable and had a lot of support. I’ve seen everything up to og threes skated in.
Not supporting the idea of the flipsyde because its an all around ugly shoe.
But i think it would be a pretty sweet idea to see jordan pay homage to skateboarding with the release of an AJ1 X Thrasher or an aj low with a fat tongue X oval laces or something. I think those would sell crazy.
Aug 19, 2008 at 3:22 pm
bump,
jb needs to start doing some online surveys or if they do find a way to get them out to more of us because im sure we all wouldve gave this idea a thumbs down. its too bad, there is nothing sacred anymore, jordans period used to be nothing but heat, even the regular consumer shwag tees and sandals i could deal with, but its going a little too far, whats next?
Aug 19, 2008 at 2:45 pm
poetic justice. I can’t believe that JB thought this would be a good idea. I agree with J.King, Jordan Brand needs to seek advise from select individuals who they can entrust with confidential info to discuss these sorts of ideas honestly.
The idea of a Jordan Brand skateboarding shoe should have never gotten this far…
Aug 19, 2008 at 2:38 pm
these sneakers are horrible
Aug 19, 2008 at 2:03 pm
i would be so freakin embarrassed if i was the one at JB that came up with the idea.
Aug 19, 2008 at 1:25 pm
yeah i work at nike factory and theyre there lol. sad sad thing.
Aug 19, 2008 at 1:02 pm
johnny qb,
Those were at the Round Rock store
Aug 19, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Big Company needs to get more consumer feedback.
Aug 19, 2008 at 12:47 pm
matt, is that in san marcos or round rock?
Aug 19, 2008 at 12:29 pm
I bet they drop to somewhere around $49. Seriously though. All the shoes that they don’t sell, they need to give to some kind of organization that provides footwear to less fortunate children that want named brand footwear or sell them for really cheap. I know its not the new “Jordan 6 Rings” but I would rather have these than some damn Starbury’s if I was a kid.
****note**** I only used 6 Rings in reference to the obscene amount of children in my complex who had them on at the bus stop for the initial day of school. In no way am I endorsing that model lol!
Aug 19, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Can we say..Jordan Brand is getting desperate? Keep putting out that trash, boys and girls.
Aug 19, 2008 at 11:54 am
These dont look to bad I might have to snatch these up.
Aug 19, 2008 at 11:46 am
