Heaven’s Gate Nike Dunk SB Laid to Rest

Heaven's Gate Nike Dunk High Sample

The Heaven’s Gate Nike Dunk SB was rumored to drop in August of this year. Inspired by the Heaven’s Gate religious cult that was headed up by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. The cult resulted in 38 dead bodies found in a mansion in San Diego, CA on March 26, 1997. All of which were rocking brand new Nike Cortez at the time of the suicides, dressed in black and white uniforms, and covered with a single purple cloth.

Nike decided not to proceed on the project, most likely because it’s a little on the controversial side, or maybe because the colorway, like the cult’s followers, might have been a little too crazy for the Heaven’s Gate uniforms.

Available on eBay now for $3000.  Info thanks to The ShoeGame/Wikipedia.

  14. YouKnow

yea these are dope but not tasteful.

  15. whoop dat trick

“the purple people eaters”, “the grape apes”, “the color purple” Kizzy SB Highs,

  16. poscogrubb

**Totally tasteless.** I remember when that HG suicide was discovered. It was awful. I might have boycotted Nike for a year if this were to release with the HG name.

It’s too bad, because those were nice looking Dunks. If they release it with a different name, people will still call them the HG Dunks.

Anyway, if Nike was to do it right, shouldn’t it have been a colorway for Cortez instead??? ;)

  17. Joe

who’s the @$$#013 sellin these for 3000.00 dollars. This guy needs to get over himself. I really dislike oppurtunist like this guy, gumsoles. Good luck finding a sucker to pay 3 G’s.

  19. diego

ONE OF THE DOPEST SHOES IN A LONG TIME… RELEASE PLEASE!!!

  20. swanson

IF NIKE DONATED THE MONEY MADE OFF OF THESE SHOES TO THE FAMILIES OR SOME OTHER CHARITY THEN IT WOULD BE OKAY IN MY OPINION OTHER THAN THAT THIS WOULD BE I SILLY IDEA TO MAKE A PROFIT OFF OF SOMETHING SO TRAGIC!

  21. terrell

i was wondering what the hell happened to these..
it is kind of a tasteless idea but they still wouldve been sexy on my feet -_-

  22. nikeindabutt

This idea is obviously tasteless…glad they canned it.
With that being said I’d love to get a high SB where the primary color is purple…

  23. DeBo

This is all rididculous! Nike doesn’t come up with the names for all these SBs. That’s not to say that specific events, people, places etc. influence the creation of the shoes, but do you really think a sneaker company could legally release it’s product with official trademarked names and get away with it without offering compensation? This could easily be a “The ARTIST FORMALLY KNOWN AS” Dunk SB. Why Heaven’s Gate?

  24. Aaron

knowing the story now, i dont think i’ll be buying these, just too creepy, it’s like supporting the event, imo
they dont really appeal to me as much any way

  25. Flatsole

These nicknames shoes get don’t come from nowhere you know…this was very much on the designer’s mind

  26. Whoop Dat Trick

    Dead Stock

  33. itsmedallas

and right after they release em they need to release a dr. kavorkian (Spell check) sb lol

    =D

    no seriously tho

    these are goregous

  37. solesaved

Naww that’s FOUL they made the right choice not to release these. I remember when this happen i would not be the rocking a pair of kicks the was made after something that tragic.

  38. EVillian87

Controversy sells… Nike is too big of a monopoly to go under over ONE shoe. I say go ahead with the release… DOPE

  39. Boogie

These janks are nice, its def contriversal but isn’t Nike known for that? They def should but realeased tho with or without the name, I don’t know if I would want somthin that symbolizes thid in my closet tho…yeah I know my comment is kinda scitso or however its spelled

  40. ImfromHtown

I just read the whole Wikipedia page on this cult and it wowed me!I bet Applegate must be pissed to find out that no UFO spaceship really exist behind the moon and that he has to lie down in his grave until JUDGEMENT DAY !!! Well at least him and his followers had on Nike when they drunk the Life taking Purple Potion

  41. brennan

    Release these!

Nike isn’t stupid enough to dub these the “heaven’s gate nike dunks”, but when they are released with no name, the people will tag them with that name on their own. It is inevitable.

(then again, by the decisions coming out of JB recently, i wouldn’t doubt if JB was stupid enough to give a name like that to a pair of hybrids etc — maybe the Ray Carruth 6-Rings, or the Jennifer Hudson dead family fusion III. Flight club would make a ‘KILLING’ off those)

  42. hahaa

these are cool but too controversial lol

  43. Whoop Dat Trick

    these are fresh to death

  44. ThaForced1

i would still rock these are nice man really nice haha just dumb that they would use that piece of history to represent the shoe.

  45. Keenan

Now really how stupid of an idea was this.
but at least i got a history lesson from it.
i definitely did research on it and ……
    damn people believe anything.
but these would be hot but using that as a buzz wouldn’t be the smartest idea.

  46. z

WTFFFFF i been waiting for these to release for like a couple months now, but i neva new the story behind em i thought they were ust for heavens gate

  47. TUNO

oh I GET IT nike did it because they were ll found in nike sneakers. I think this is a silly idea

  48. moosecow417

I remember hearing about these a little while ago, but I didn’t think it was true. The colorway is nice, but the inspiration is in bad taste.

  49. tmac2magic

and this news is on the front page why?
    this was news months ago…

  50. unknown23fan

    Jerronimo,

Definitely all about the buzz. Pretty lame way to make money on this one to say the least. Imagine if they were the PlayStation Dunks.

  51. sb addict

Like damn these shoes are sweet !
These should of been a realease
    DEFINITELY !

  52. Jerronimo

WTF was Nike thinking? Do they come up with colorways and paint these bs stories behind the creation to create a buzz….hmmm, makes sense don’t it?…now make dollars

  53. wat it dew

these would be some boss shoes if they didnt have them for that reason cults are not to be celebrated we need some Barack Obama dunks and forces

  54. agenda

    RELEASE THESE!!!!!!

  55. Elvira

these are pretty wet, but I see why Nike wnt put em on

  56. ohiosnkrhead

The colorway is flawless! A little bit of purple goes a loooong way.. Ask the Dinosaur Jr.’s, but they should release these without the ‘Heaven’s Gate’ title.

  57. unknown23fan

    Sorry,

That is weird that Nike would do a shoe for this. I remember this vividly and it definitely is not an event in history deserving of a shoe.

  58. soulie17

thats stupid to make a shoe out of thats a horrible event and should not have a shoe made for it!!!

  59. unknown23fan

That is weird that Nike would do a shoe for this. I remember this vividly and it definitely an event in history deserving of a shoe.

  60. Rich

    These are dope tho
