Converse Weapon ‘86 Returns

Converse Weapon Returns

The return of a heated Los Angeles/Boston rivalry between the Lakers and Celtics welcomes too the return of the shoe that was at the center of some of the fiercest battles.  The Converse Weapon was the shoe worn by commanders of their squads and Hall of Famers Larry Bird and Magic Johnson in the epic 1986 NBA Finals.  Though many draw a near synonym between the shoes and the two former players mentioned, it should not be forgotten that the Converse Weapon was worn by other NBA greats that include Isiah Thomas, Bernard King, Mark Aguirre, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish, Bill Laimbeer, as well as a young Karl Malone.

Though the Converse Weapon ‘86 may be obsolete as a technical basketball shoe by today’s standards, at the time of its release, the Weapon featured some of the best design for stability that the market had to offer. The shoes feature the Y Bar system which extends the exterior of the upper around the ankle locking the heel in place and minimizing slipping on the foot bed.

Converse, a brand that just celebrated 100 years of continued success, will reintroduce the Weapon this month in timeless colors made famous on the feet of Magic and Bird. Celebrating the history of the shoes the shoes feature a 100% original color blocking and a repeating 1986 scoreboard pattern tieing back to the year the Weapon first hit the battle field.

I love the pimpin new kicks
    They r sooooo sexy

  3. GG

Celtics wore black away and home up until the early 2000’s. During the pierce/walker days Red finally said they could wear white at home. Since then they have gotten more colorful both away and home.

  4. pip33

  10. poscogrubb

Time for a Throwback Thursday? I’d like to see how these retros stack up against the OGs… not as “high” as the OG’s, I bet. Is it me, or do the Weapons in the ads just look… taller? Nah, they ARE taller.

Hmmmm, this retro is also not all-leather, which is sucky.

But I like the Weapons enough to say I’m glad it’s being retro’d.

  11. Supreme13z

I stand corrected…the Converse website says hi but for some reason they look like mids. I think it’s the way it’s laced up.

  12. Supreme13z

Lovin’ these throwbacks! But I do not think these are true to form…these look like midtops and the OG’s are hightops. Still clean tho but I’d prefer the hightops.

  13. jordan fan

I remembe the commercial… Bird says “Converse made shoes for last year’s MVP”, then Magic comes out of a limo I think, and removes his warm-up pants and says “Well, Converse made shoes for this year’s MVP…” Ha, that was a good one!!!

  14. J-Hovared

  23. Juanlupe

Thank you. Love black and white kicks.

  24. Nice Kicks

^ Bird and the rest of the Celts wore Black/White kicks up until the mid 90s as I recall. Yes, they were black with white accents.

  25. Juanlupe

Was Larrys Kicks dark green or black? Could never really tell. Nice Kicks please inform me.

  26. J.KING

I have mad deadstocks from 02. This looks ok but for someone like me who had the OGs and the 1st retro…this is a farce.

  27. J.KING

An undisputed icon. Glad to see it return in a true and pure form.

    blk/wht looks better than purple/urine

  38. last name "Mask"

i dont know ish about larry bird and magic johnson but i do know that these kicks will go great wit a pair of levi’s

  39. oval57sanch

Birds pair > Magics? You nuts, you must be a laker hater.

  40. Nice Kicks

^ The Hyperdunks are being worn by alot of great players, but not so many multi-All Stars/future Hall of Famers. It will be interesting to see where the Hypedunk will land itself in history.

  41. dopasaurus

^^^ That might be an interesting inquiry. Hyperdunks might be close, but a lot of players (B-Roy) switch up models so much. There are also a lot more brands out there now, too.

  42. Nice Kicks

It’s quite incredible when you look at that list of all the people who wore the shoes. Besides the Adidas Superstars/Promodels and Converse Chuck Taylors, I wonder if there is any pair of shoes that can boast having such a resume of players wearing the same shoe in the same year.

An undisputed icon. Glad to see it return in a true and pure form.

  43. raider rob

    bird’s pair! nice kicks!

  44. MJSF

    Bird’s pair>Magic’s

  45. larryk
