Lakai Telford
Posted by George Kiel III | May 5, 2009
In February, we showed you Lakai’s 10 Year Anniversary releases, and those who commented were very skeptical of them. However, check out this fresh, newly-designed Lakai Telford. We have seen a plethora of Lakai colorways but none this stylish and subtle. It contains a 100% black wrinkled leather upper mixed with a white leather midsole. Coinciding with the black wrinkled leather upper, this shoe is also complimented with a black outsole. Other features include black shoelaces and the gold Lakai logo on the midsole. Check your nearest Lakai retailer to snag the Lakai Telford for $74. |

A Nike Dunk knockoff indeed. I do applaud the affordable price, tho (quote)
Lakai has been making the Telford model for at least three years, maybe longer. The Nike Dunk high tops, on the other hand, had been out of production since the 80’s and were only brought back in the past two years. Even in the 1980s Nike wasn’t the only company making high tops, Converse, Puma, Rebok, etc all had some form of high top, I suppose if you wanted to play this game you could say that Nike ripped off Converse since Converse came out with the Chuck Taylor in 1917 and the one stars in the early 70’s. All that the skate shoe companies were doing was filling a gap in the market, until Nike decided that there was money to be made by following the retro trend and started reproducing their old Dunk models.
Speaking of rape, Nike is “A” #1 offender in that regard, look up a company called “Savier”. Nike tried numerous times to break into the skateboard shoe market, and failed, so around 2002 they bought a 25% stake in Savier, allowing them to use Nike’s R&D department, but Savier controlled the design, production, and marketing. Savier was doing fine, their products were well liked, good looking, they had a good reputation, they sold well, and the company was run by and for skateboarding. That wasn’t good enough for Nike though, Nike wanted their own skate shoes under their own name, under their own control, so they marketed their own, but aside from sneakerheads everyone thought they were ugly and preferred the Savier models. So Nike pulled out their 25% stake in Savier, caused a cash flow problem, and Savier had no choice but to close their doors, ridiculous really.
Even to this day the majority of Nike skate shoes are sold to sneakerheads, the only difference is that they are sold in skateboard shops instead of Footlocker. In one respect the skate shoe companies are still filling a gap in the market, there is a market out there for skaters (or anyone) who may like retro styling but will never accept wearing Nike or anything made by them.
