The Good, The Bad, The Fugly
Posted by Nick Engvall | May 9, 2009One of my favorite parts of the week, The Good, The Bad, and The Fugly has once again arrived. No, not because it means it is the weekend, more so because I get to see how all of you feel about some of the notable releases for the week. Plus its guaranteed that some of you are going to disagree with the choices, and some of you have some good reasoning behind your choices. So keep letting us know what you think. I’ll be picking a few of the best readers choices each week as winners of some Nice Kicks gear, so check back in the comments section frequently.
Without holding you up any longer, take a look at this weeks choices by clicking here.
The Good

This Air Jordan Flight 45 will probably be one of the most hated choices for many of you. Hear me out, yes, Jordan Brand over-uses the AJ3 sole, yes they over-use elephant print. However, consider the footwear game. Every company has to use its signature features, from the Chuck Taylor to Supra extra high tops, to the Reebok Pump.
This shoe is a creative “new” silhouette, it may have familiarities, but the fact that it is not just another classic Jordan colorway slapped onto a clear Air Force 1 sole, or another mish-mash of classics (see this weeks “The Bad”), is a good thing in my opinion. Those are to predictable, we’ve seen them, we know they’re coming. I commend JB for pushing a new silhouette that isn’t just another hybrid, but you all can start hating on me now.

i look forward to a tradition of animal based shoes!
May 12, 2009 at 12:34 am
The ugly… Koi fish???? UGLY
May 12, 2009 at 12:33 am
the bad…60+… i think i made these in my garage high as a kite one early morning then sent them into JB and they ran with my idea!!! Serious, they really look like someone patched or FRANKENSTIENED these together
May 12, 2009 at 12:28 am
the good…. 45s… are way better than 98.9% of the HYBRID/FUSION jordans out there.
May 11, 2009 at 12:36 pm
This designer should be fired!
May 11, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Wat The F@CK?!
May 11, 2009 at 12:29 pm
I like these. It’s better than fusing it with AF1’s!!!
May 11, 2009 at 10:37 am
reebok gets the fugly more than anybody…but yeah i agree with all the posts. Them jordans is nasty I might have to actually buy a pair for the first time.
May 11, 2009 at 9:43 am
The fugly really takes the cake this week.
May 11, 2009 at 6:08 am
the good is great
May 11, 2009 at 3:53 am
well… the 60+ are straight. i like the colors. the fugleys are fish sneakers. not hot at all. im not feeling those flight 45. jb sometimes does to much. just cause its jordan they shouldnt use the name to sell sneakers. its unappealing to me
May 10, 2009 at 10:42 pm
guys…. JBs mash up of previous jordans aren’t that bad. i have some jordans in the series and i can see that they’re really walkin another path in terms of design and performance.
it’s like your girlfriend gettin a titjob for your own satisfaction. only a bit lesser so quit hatin aight?

The 45’s remind me of the big funds and I liked those. Their straight, but not worth the price tag. The 60+ are straight garbage truck juice with a side of a$$ cakes! I’d rather wear clear reebok classics with dirty socks!!!
May 10, 2009 at 8:48 pm
all bad but the 60+ joints are the worst….YUCK!!!!!
May 10, 2009 at 8:16 pm
I really like those Flight45s. To me they look sleek. I can just see myself rockin em with some black NBA socks, a black polo, and my ATL fitted. I am personally tired of people having this preconceived notion that fusion-type shoes don’t look good. There have been so many sneakers made that its impossible to use all new ideas on new style shoes. I just wish people would be a little more open-minded and not be so set on there precious jordan retros. Don’t get me wrong, the retros are the best, but be open-minded for reuse of retro features

See this is where I find the comments above as hilarious. The Jordan Flight 45 is this years version of the Flight 23 from last year. Those things came out in 100 different colorways and sold to insane numbers. Wait til you see some more looks to this shoe and remember it, you are gonna see it on feet at every 3 on 3 tournament and casual wearers at malls all over the place!
May 10, 2009 at 5:30 pm
i agree with most of the comments, i don’t like any of em. but the last ones truly deserve the Fugly spot lmao
May 10, 2009 at 4:33 pm
NONE OF THESE ARE THAT BAD IF YOU EM RIGHT…
BUT DAMN THATS GONNA BE KINDA HARD WITH THE FUGLY…
May 10, 2009 at 2:47 pm
long hair dont care
May 10, 2009 at 2:37 pm
all those are weak
May 10, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Ugh, that “Good” is still a hybrid sneaker I.M.O. It can be described just like you did to the “Bad”: with a shake of the head. Although they cannot be compared to L.A. Gear, they sure do look pretty bootleg. Stealth c/w with elephant print and Jordan 3 sole? Not much better than the garbage mix of classic JB elements on the Laney 60+. That said, I agree with the “Bad” for this week, but I think you could’ve thrown the “Good” shoe into that category too, reversed your reasonings as to why it was “Good”, and applied it to BOTH shoes (60+ & Flight 45). THEN find a better shoe for “Good”, because that garbage surely didn’t deserve the title for the week.
Considering that:
- the choice for “Good” was NOT that creative (a strap on some wanna-be 4 upper with 3 sole?) OR new (STOP USING CLASSIC MATERIAL ON NEW SHOES, ONLY ON RETROS. FIND A NEW THING FOR YOUR BRAND, and stop playing out old ideas by using them in horrible ways).
- it IS a mish-mash of classics (although it’s not a classic fused with another and branded as “the best of both worlds).
- it IS just another attempt at making a SIMILAR silhouette to shoes they’ve done in the past.
- it was actually seen coming by many people (therefore shooting down your point of it being “unpredictable”) after the mass waves of fusions that they’ve thrown onto us.
…your choice wasn’t very “Good”.
They want to appeal to both new and old with this, but I don’t think it’s working for either generation. Back to the drawing board for Jordan for new, better, innovative ideas…
but really: who is designing shoes for the people? With this recycled TRASH that they’re throwing out at us, they’re designing kicks for the sole purpose of corporate, materialistic life: making MONEY.
May 10, 2009 at 10:03 am
Not mad at the AJ3 sole nor the elephant print, the shoe in itself is jus ugly…and that strap…eww…lol
And I like the Laney High colourway 60+’s…
I’ve never really liked Reeboks(excluding the Answer IV’s(beautiful lol)) but they jus keep gettin uglier and uglier to me…Hey! They should retro the Shaqnosis’ lol…I’d cop em…
ps.U can’t say LA Gear aint got some phli looking shoes…lol

May 10, 2009 at 7:43 am
i see what your saying on the airj 45 nick its true thats all jordan has been doing taking lego pieces of his shoes and piling em up with other pieces i havent seen a new fresh shilouette in a while i guess they kinda just gave up after the 23 right? well as they all say all good things gotta come to an end or they wouldnt be good no more
May 10, 2009 at 5:58 am
My girlfriend came up with a new word “Bugly” for butt ugly after seeing the fugly shoes
May 10, 2009 at 1:15 am
Damn…I dislike that good pick…but the Bad pick might look good in person…no comment for the fugly
May 10, 2009 at 1:07 am

May 10, 2009 at 12:52 am

May 10, 2009 at 12:50 am
man, that’s really the best they can find for the week? are they blind lol? i’d go with the wolverine big nikes over those for the best, that pair definitely caught my attention
May 10, 2009 at 12:20 am
The black and redfusion j’s are off the chain fresssssh!
May 10, 2009 at 12:12 am
