Exclusive: Interview with Looted Shop Holy Grail
Posted by Matt Halfhill | Jun 15, 2009 In the midst of last night’s mayhem, sneaker consignment shop Holy Grail was looted by a rioting mob. To get the full scope of the madness that existed last night at the store and to attempt to grasp the aftermath, Nice Kicks got an exclusive interview with Holy Grail’s store manager Liz Sanchez.
Click here to find out what was uncovered. |

Holy Grail Looted
Matt Halfhill - Nice Kicks: First things first, we are very sorry to hear about what occurred last night. Were you by any chance at the store when the riot broke out?
Liz Sanchez - Holy Grail: No. I was actually at home where I watched the game and I saw on TV the crowds starting to form and so I headed over to the shop as soon as I could. Unfortunately, while I was on my way I got the call from my security company that the alarm was set off and that the store had been broken into.
Matt: How did the crowd break into the store? Was the glass smashed?
Liz: The crowd tried to break the glass, but was unsuccessful. They broke in by breaking the locks at the bottom of the doors. According to accounts from people who witnessed it all happen, the crowd was chanting “We want shoes! We want shoes!.”
Matt: You mention “the crowd”. How many people were gathered in front of your store attempting to break in?
Liz: When I talked to the police, they said that there were a minimum of 150 people trying to get in.
Matt: How long after the store was broken into did you arrive?
Liz: I really am not too sure. Everything seems like it happened so quickly. When I arrived, the police were there. In fact one of the officers told me that they were scared to go in while the mob was looting the store. They just had to let them do what they wanted to do.
They took everything. Just plain everything. We have only 20 shoes left and all are damaged with boxes destroyed in the mess. Two computers that were at the front were taken and burned. They destroyed all but the window glass.
The only thing that they didn’t get was the computer in the back.
Matt: Was this computer more important than the others that were taken?
Liz: Yes! This computer had EVERYTHING on it. It had our inventory, our backups, our records. We are very thankful that this computer was not taken or destroyed.
Matt: Do you know yet how many shoes were stolen or damaged as a result of the riot?
Liz: At least $150,000. I don’t know the total amount of shoes or specific numbers. I haven’t even slept since last night.
Matt: How long has Holy Grail been open?
Liz: We have been open right at a year and a half. Year and 7 months. We never had any problems before this. The whole South Park area is improving and there is always security on patrol.
Matt: I know that Holy Grail was a consignment based shop. What will happen for those who’s shoes were sitting in the store on consignment when the riot happened?
Liz: We have a wonderful insurance company that has everything covered. Everyone will be reimbursed for their shoes that were damaged - not even questionable. We prepared for the worst and are fortunate we did.
Matt: On behalf of the Nice Kicks staff, we are truly sorry for what has occurred and wish you and your business the best of luck.
Liz: Thank you, Matt.

Yo that ish ain’t cool. That ish is as bad as when the phillies won the chip. Man it was riot city. And this suitcase store was looted thank god our sneaker stores has iron gate on the windows. Riots is nutty
Jul 19, 2009 at 11:17 am
The people who run Holy Grail are super cool. All the thieves that night were common bandits who steal from tip trays, dodge subway fares and don’t contribute to the community what so ever. And for sneakers? Plastic, leather and some rubber? Doesn’t bide well for the future generations.
Jun 25, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Stupid, stupid, stupid people! “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or ANYTHING that belongs to your neighbor.” Exodus 20:17

cliff: black people
Jun 19, 2009 at 12:48 am
Wow people acting like its some sh!t embedded in people cause they are Lakers fans…its LA people…But yeah the rioting is ridiculous…Can’t you just celebrate and be civil. Looting should only be done if its a nessecity (IE Katrina). I aint gonna front tho…If I was there…the store was already open and I seen people running up in there getting free kicks…I’d prolly be up in there…the sh!t gon get taken one way or another. Why not lace my feet. It sucks that the store had things stolen just to get burned or broken…the worst part is the money they will miss out on while they arent open. A few missing kicks aint really hurting nobody since they got insurance. And they got so much publicity from this that when they do reopen…biz is gonna be boomin. Lets hope when the Lakers win next year (yeah I said it) they keep it clean.
Jun 18, 2009 at 8:55 pm
yall know if yall was there, you would have taken something.
Jun 18, 2009 at 2:44 am
This is horrible. I can only hope that the press that were outside covering the mayhem have released the photos to the cops. I bet that a few of these idiots are already in the system and can be prosecuted. My heart goes out to the business owners who put their blood, sweat and tears into making this a premier place for sneaker heads to live their dreams. Starting a business and succeeding is not easy. Building clientele, inventory, credibility…that costs thousands of dollars and takes years of dedication. Congrats on having great insurance and a back up plan. I know it will be tough, but I know Holy Grail will recover.
I saw the photos of the riot and was disgusted that the city spent another 5 million to celebrate two days later. The players definitely earned their party, but a few bums definitely ruined it for the many of the loyal fans. It was disgusting and embarrassing to see Angelenos of all colors acting like animals. It reminded me of the 1995 UCLA championship, and believe me race is not a factor. A championship is not an excuse to damage property or loot a growing business. Fans need to grow up and cease the mob mentality.
Jun 17, 2009 at 10:47 pm
i can understand a riot because ur team lost but because they won??????????????????? fill me in is that how they celebrate in LA
Jun 17, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Shut your sensitive ass up ceez. I wasn’t being serious
Jun 17, 2009 at 11:37 am
yo thats crazy! i feel for the consignment shop! plus thats a big blow for the whole sneaker community as well! like one blogger said to i feel for those people who lost some hot kicks (collectables!) that just makes me sick but remember, god sees everything!
Jun 17, 2009 at 2:56 am
To you lowlifes who are celebrating the looting and wishing you had stolen some shoes; I pray for your mental recovery. You definitely are the negatives in our soceity.
Jun 16, 2009 at 5:49 pm
i agree i agree WHAT CAN YOU DO ITS IN L.A. there were probably a lot of poor and ignorant fans outside there. and they were probably the ones who looted the stores not ALL the fans outside generally.
Jun 16, 2009 at 1:43 pm
People aren’t blaming the Lakers. They are simply basketball players. I am blaming the dumb*** fans of the Lakers. I live in LA. Sure its a consignment store, but I guarantee the people who looted couldn’t spell consignment let alone know what it means, so lets not try and make these rioters smarter than they actually are. I know riots happen by a lot of big teams and big cities, but lets take a bad team in a big city, such as the Clippers, and really play out what would happen had they won. The streets of L.A. would not only be safer due to the lack of fans (lol), but the riots, car flipping, fires, etc.. would simply not happen. If you have ever been to a Lakers/Clippers game, you know what I am talking about. Lakers fans are not only rowdier, but they are almost considered legally insane. They get belligerently drunk, which is fine, until they can’t control their liquor anymore and it spills onto the streets. And to be honest, Staples really ain’t “hood” anymore. They have built more around that building than probably any stadium in the nation. All that being said, I truly have a stong distaste for Lakers fans and what they have done to a damn nice shoe boutique. Nicekicks was right by saying its a damn shame to those of you who wanted to help with this crap. Stealing is one thing, rioting is a whole ‘nother story. Insurance might cover the cost of the kicks, but now what. Who is going to bring their shoes to sell to them after this. Not I, and thats a damn shame. They have nothing left but 20 beat up pairs of shoes, and a computer with inventory. Thats not enough to get yourself back on your feet. I wish it was, but they are missing everything. I hope they can get back on their feet, but who knows these days in this terrible economy. Who knew eBay would be the safest place to buy/sell shoes?
Jun 16, 2009 at 12:38 pm
It’s a shame!!! Lakers won BUT THEY STILL SUCK. People rioting the store disgust me and they shouldn’t be living in this world bc they are useless and causing troubles.
Jun 16, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Smmfh @ people trying to blame the Lakers for this.
Jun 16, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Alotta yall are sour. Ish happens. The shoe game is fine. stop aktin like itz a natural disaster. and on top of that, a few hundred ppl do NOT define a city of 5 Million. We got Celebrities and ballin ass rich people that come from a history of wealth down here. Itz hood ppl in every city. Stop aktin like Lakers Fans are the worst fans. I
kno for a FACT that when OHIO STATE play Michigan they akt worst than this and that’s just one game.
Jun 16, 2009 at 11:58 am
FU*K LA
Jun 16, 2009 at 11:52 am
a bunch of loosers in this pic. wish you best of luck “holy grail”!
Jun 16, 2009 at 11:52 am
END IT ALL NOW NORTH KOREA? (HEY WINDOW) U WISH DEATH ON YOUR OWN PEOPLE? WHY DONT YOU GO AND JOIN NORTH KOREA AND GET THAT ASS WHIPPED LIKE BEFORE LOL!!!
Jun 16, 2009 at 11:44 am
Man, for anybody to say that insurance will cover this, that’s just wack…but I do guess that the people selling their shoes didn’t care about the shoes, just the money.
Regardless, I hope that everybody who stole gets caught and is persecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If you can’t afford something, you shouldn’t even be thinking about it. Get a damn job or two and save up if you want something that badly…or get it when it came out.
Jun 16, 2009 at 11:15 am
humanity is doomed.
Just end it all now north korea.
Jun 16, 2009 at 10:50 am

And I mean “ARC” (Alife) - somehow my spell check put “ALR” - but whatever…
Back to sleep.
Jun 16, 2009 at 10:39 am
Hopefully the rest of the [sneaker] world is taking note, so they can prevent this from happening again… not that I truly even “care.”
You can try to stop it from happening, but there’s always a way around everything, believe that.
Jun 16, 2009 at 10:37 am
MontanaCaiRo - what makes this more “terrible” than the other events that took place during these riots and celebrations?
Get real!
And it’s a WRAP for ALR, FC and everthing else if the NYK win a championship.
Jun 16, 2009 at 10:36 am
who cares honestly…
shawty said she had incredible insurance, so everything gonna get fix’d, replaced & restored probably bigger & better than before… Im sure she isnt incredibly pissed that her store was looted, no one was hurt & she still had the pc she ran her numbers thru which is great for insurance company everyone wins here but the insurance company & personallly who cares bout those f*@k$, when they were probably tax’n her in the 1st place…
Jun 16, 2009 at 9:11 am

I’m a L.A. native and avid sneaker collector, i seen coming when the Lakers made it into the playoffs……………………………..What do you expect when you open a consignment store next to the Staple Center in the hood……………….
Jun 16, 2009 at 12:24 am

Jun 16, 2009 at 12:18 am
damn,
that’s crazy smh
Jun 16, 2009 at 12:12 am
judging by the pics it figures. Lakers win, riot, Rodney King, riot, this and that, riot. I swear they are just finding things to riot for. Just like Oakland Bart shooting, peaceful demonstration turns into riot. Only they can make shoes into riot, like Pigeons and DMPs. If yall cant afford it, its okay, you dont got to be keeping up with the Joneses. And no, the media does not make you look bad, you already do it yourself!
Jun 16, 2009 at 12:02 am
wow thats crazy uhh wow looted haven’t seen that since katrina messed up thing but ” All i wanna know is why” the friggin lakers won cmon its all kool though these things happen but u repe what you sow so u steal aye its gonna happen to them let it be

Jun 15, 2009 at 9:04 pm
Well, these Nikes are mostly made by slave labor, and have a real value of $5 a pair. So I’m not going to cry because some guy who sells them for $500 to suckers, got his shop broken into.
He has insurance, everything is fine.
its true the people who are making theses shoes are bearly gettin paid, now thats disgusting.
and
Mr. Willson
Jun 15, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Good thing that store has their insurance on lock. However, I am dumbfounded that some of the cats who are commenting are actually UPSET they DIDN’T get to participate in theft! Is it that serious you can’t make your own damn money and buy your own ish? You have to go and steal someone else’s to “stay fresh”? Somehow this is funny to some of you?
So I guess you would be making those SAME comments if someone kicked in your door and took your collection WITHOUT property insurance? I highly doubt it.
Unf’ingbelievable.
- You have to go and steal someone else’s to “stay fresh”?
most steal to “stay alive”
these guys are taking boxes, and boxes
most likely they are sellin em on e bay right now
prolly many of the shoes arent even their size
prolly you have stole something in your life too
maybe it wasnt shoes but stealing is stealing
you have the same reasons and you get the same feelings
you know it aint right, but you still did it
shame for everyone, not only for the one who stole the shoes
Jun 15, 2009 at 10:15 pm
This is terrible and I hope everything goes alright, good thing they had good insurance. But all seriousness aside, this is too funny. Dude in the pic got like 5 boxes lmao.
But again with the serious. That’s messed up though. I really don’t think these guys will get caught, you would really have to have a record and somebody will have to give you up. In these riot incidents maybe like 10% get caught and the rest get away just because of the sheer number involved. Times like this you just gotta move foward and worked harder whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
Since when did people start trusting the LAPD again, don’t do it because you will only get let down. I LAUGH at the LAPD….. HA!!!!
Jun 15, 2009 at 10:11 pm
First of all “June from the holygrail,” I don’t sell my kicks for profit (which is why people do consignment), so that’s out of the question.
Second, you should work on your grammar and spelling, Jesus!
I feel more bad for the fact that you’re most likely a grown man, putting sentences together that way, than the store being looted.
SMH!
Jun 15, 2009 at 10:03 pm
It’s pretty childesh how some of you act about taken sneakers. dont you know that our store is consignment. How would you like it if you put your sneakers on consigment and someone loot the store you put it in there. that is so wrong of you and for that you are all immature for thinking negative. They took over a $150,000 worth of sneakers, hats, and vintage wear. Do you know how i feel right now?! But its okay we are going to re-build! and we are going to be strong!
Jun 15, 2009 at 9:57 pm
Yah dudes just get any lil excuse 2 hate on da lakers man its da lakers fault the robbed this store next they gon kobe was behind all this man it was just a bunch idiots what makes u think it was laker fans give it up dudes don’t hate da lakers don’t hate kobe cuz in da end we da best just accept it
Jun 15, 2009 at 9:49 pm
If you check Craigslist for the LA area, a number of the sneakers are being sold there.
Jun 15, 2009 at 9:42 pm
thats just crazy
Jun 15, 2009 at 9:04 pm
Well, these Nikes are mostly made by slave labor, and have a real value of $5 a pair. So I’m not going to cry because some guy who sells them for $500 to suckers, got his shop broken into.

Jun 15, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Many good points have been made concerning this extremely unfortunate incident.
There have been an almost equal amount of stupid comments made as well.
The bottom line is, everyone caught on camera will be found and prosecuted. No one really gets away with anything.
There are many opportunists out there and although I do not like the Lakers, I don’t think these losers were out celebrating this victory. As with many criminals, they used the chaos around them as a catalyst for crimes they planned to commit.
In the long run, these low-lives will always be bottom-feeders.
As for the things they stole, they have upset the balance of the shoe game in that area. I expect that things will get back to normal but these losers feed the stereotypes.
Please don’t “racially profile” them. Just let them do the same things over and over again and PLEASE don’t pay attention to the pattern they proudly present to us all.
Jun 15, 2009 at 8:32 pm
datz messed up i want 2 say i wish i waz der and at da same time i dont cuz i neva really stold anything n my life cuz itz wrong but cant say dat cuz u dont kno wat u wud do if u waz der at da time srry 2 hear dat holy grail datz a bad luk bounce bak ya digg
Jun 15, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Sad, very sad. No excuses there, no matter color, race, or team preference. Stealing is a felony and won’t be tolerated. Every one hast to condemn it no matter where or when it happens.
I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a riot/mob thing, those guys who broke in first had it in mind to do it the day the Lakers win, no matter it was the game 5, game 6 or game 7… or even if the Lakers loose, it was premeditated. They planned to show up there and disguise it as a Riot thing.
Hope the LAPD track them down and put them behind bars.
Jun 15, 2009 at 7:08 pm
I love how all the blacks are the ones STEALING ( no surprise there) and the white dudes are the ones taking the pictures….
The stereotypes prove to be right once again…
Jun 15, 2009 at 6:29 pm
LMAO @ color me surprised. There may not be looting/fires in a city, but I will PROMISE you, people will take to the streets and do one of the other.
I live IN Durham, 15 mins from Chapel Hill & UNC’s campus and minutes from Duke.
People were outside doing some of everything when UNC won this year/2005 and Duke in 2001!
Even when the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup, there was madness in Raleigh.
May have not been fires, looting, etc., but people vandalized things, got arrested, all the same as with this LA situation.
No surprise. Sorry.
Jun 15, 2009 at 6:21 pm
YeeZy23 - If that’s the case, then how about people (on video) IN Lakers attire, that are tearing sh!t up on the streets of LA and around Staples Center?
Miss me with that dumb ass excuse as to why these people are doing what they’re doin’.
YES, some people do look for opportunities to take advantage of mischievous thoughts, but A LOT of the times, it’s the FANS who are mainly behind it all, taking to the streets and going wild.
Jun 15, 2009 at 6:16 pm
should have rented a few stray pit bulls from the pound and left them in the store.
Jun 15, 2009 at 6:13 pm
^^^That’s funny. I live in GA. When the Braves won the World Series or when the Falcons ACTUALLY made it to a SB, I don’t remember the city getting burned to the ground or looted. I’m pretty sure I don’t remember looting in NC when the Tarheels won. So, yeah, you can color me “surprised”.
So, if a store charges up to 4 times the price of the sneaker and that makes one upset, that gives them the right to BREAK THE LAW??? Hmm, I guess I can go and lift that pack of gum my university bookstore is charging me $1.89 for. I wonder if that same defense would hold up in court if any of you were to get arrested. Probably not.
Here’s a thought. If you don’t agree with the price, DON’T BUY THEM. If no product is sold and if the prices DON’T go down then: No money = no store. Pretty simple concept. Has nothing to do with money, status, employment, whatever. It’s just plain ignorance. Franchise/Corporations can eventually recover from losses like this. It can be WAY harder for a small, private owned business to do so.
Jun 15, 2009 at 6:07 pm
wantin something free and stealing are two totally different things.. how are you defending thieves??? somebody bust up your house and steals your shoes its ok?? you cant blame them right? they wanted something free.. right? thieves are straight bums.. theres no way around it.
Jun 15, 2009 at 6:00 pm
I thought this was a joke at first but man this is just bodene joe. I have to admit I laughed XD @buddy running with bout 50 boxes.
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:47 pm
LMAO AT HOMIE WIT THE 4 BOXES HE DIPPIN! LOL!
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:45 pm
what do you expect from a city ruled mostly by thugs and gangs some people was just waiting for this opportunity and alot of them are out just to ransack and destroy property but are clueless about basketball and has no clue of what this title means for the city of LA!
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Is that dude in the middle of the picture wearing some Creative Recs?
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:42 pm
the same thing happened when the raiders lost the superbowl . In oakland LA and san diego
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:36 pm
I wonder why this is even a “big issue” though… all because it’s a sneaker shop?
Well, if looting of a sneaker store is that bad, then how about the vandalism of other properties, etc.?
Is that any less of a “problem/issue?”
If so, then people have their priorities all screwed up.
And this happens EVERYTIME a franchise wins a championship, even when teams in the NCAA win BCS and Final Four Championships.
So why are we so “surprised?”

Jun 15, 2009 at 5:34 pm

You guys are idiots for saying I shouldve jacked some.
Liz is a nice girl, she’s always there.
Hopefully they get back up on there “kicks”(feet)
Most of the people rioting ain’t even Lakers fans. They just found an excuse to go riot!
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:34 pm
It truly saddens me that some people would laugh at other’s misfortune. Holy Grail has people to pay and families to feed. In tough times like these, this is no joke.
I look forward to the day that Holy Grail can re-open its doors.
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:34 pm
Wackness… oh & the idiot that said “Why do black people steal…?”
Look at the pic again.. there’s white people there too.
still the whole situation sucks… cuz’ those kicks are irreplaceable… who cares about the loot when you can’t replace what’s been stolen…
I feel for ya’ll.. I do.
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Neezy…brilliance among the ignorant is how I see it. Glad there is somebody else out there using more than 10% of their brain…
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:24 pm
wait…so the lakers winning the game caused the riot…semi understandable…
then ppl just went crazy and robbed a shoe store?
wtf? oh well at least its some white people in the photo so black people dont look completely stupid
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:24 pm
CNASH You made some good points.
Had my very first comment been posted (I guess it was too long) I made the same exact comment about the job thing and free kicks.
People act as though if you have thoughts of looting, etc., you’re broke, yada, yada, yada.
Also the comment about over pricing, was in my comment as well.

It’s REALLY bad that the shop was wholly dependent on ONE computer for ALL their business records. You have to keep at least one backup in a REMOTE location (e.g. at home or in a bank deposit box). You have to keep your customer records encrypted. Granted, they’ve been open for less than two years, but still… Had it not been looting, they could have lost a major asset — business information — to theft of the computer, fire, earthquake,… Insurance can’t replace that kind of loss.
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:22 pm
yeah if the knicks win we’ll all go to flightclub and do the same LOL!
Jun 15, 2009 at 5:19 pm
FYI, just bekuz u want somethin for free doesnt mean u dont have a job. Everybody on here knows dey would want some kicks for the low..whatz lower than FREE? LMAO. Also, dey were taxin in that store. The people that broke in were probably mad bekuz the prices were 2,3, and 4 times retail price. Dats robbery everyday of the week to me. also, this got the store alotta publicity. Their customers and fanbase has grown tremendously from this post by nicekicks. Blessing in disguise…

Jun 15, 2009 at 4:07 pm
I agree with Mr. Wilson…it’s really kinda disgusting that some people up here saying that they wish they were there. They’re shoes…seriously…taking someone else’s livelyhood just so you think that you’re “fresh”…I seriously hope whoever posted that gets their ish stolen just so they know how it feels.
Jun 15, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Jun 15, 2009 at 4:05 pm
I’ve been to this store a couple of times and yes, they did have fire there. I feel real bad for these guys. Its not LA people, I’m from LA. Its the Lakers fans. I’m a Clippers fan. Sure we suck, but I know if we ever win something, we certainly wouldn’t act like a bunch of buffoons running around looting local businesses. There is a tat shop right next door. I’m surprised they didn’t try and jack that crap too. Very unfortunate what happened last night.
Jun 15, 2009 at 4:05 pm
damn that sucks. well at least three people got caught right there in the pic.
Jun 15, 2009 at 4:03 pm
To the ignorant guy who made the comment “Why do black people steal”. All people steal white, black, purple and green. It just so is that the only people caught on cam where black. So lets not put this on the entire race but on the individuals involved! Sorry for what happen Holy Grail.
Jun 15, 2009 at 3:58 pm
unbelievable.. some of yall actually wish yall were there to steal???? yall some straight bums. get a job you worthless bums.
Jun 15, 2009 at 3:57 pm
they blew it. Shoes are nice and all but i would never steal a pair. Thats just disrespect to the shoe game.
Jun 15, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Best of luck to them getting back on their feet and to keep doing what they do, too.
Jun 15, 2009 at 3:44 pm

Jun 15, 2009 at 3:07 pm
That’s a Dam Shame,But you gotta admit it’s kinda funny…
Jun 15, 2009 at 3:05 pm
this is wrong on all levels…for ppl to have to resort to looting and bustin into local shoe shops…to get kicks? i know we in a tough time…would a real sneakerhead join in on the looting or try to stop the knuckleheads??
Jun 15, 2009 at 3:05 pm
go lakers-you disgust me. that is place of business. basketball is just a game and collecting shoes is a hobby. it is not life! destroying somebody’s lively hood to bring goods is wrong. and it seems that those people that took have problems with their small manhood!!!!!! i hope all of you get caught, but it will only be a slap on the wrists for what you done to one of your fellow collectors. it is a shame. believing it is alright to steal during a riot, you guys just f****ed it up for a lot of people and for your city.
Jun 15, 2009 at 3:04 pm
