Does Dwyane Wade fit into the Signature Shoe Model for Jordan Brand?

At one time, being chosen by a brand to have a signature line was the ultimate sign of accomplishment. Some of the greatest Hall of Famers didn’t hear of such a thing, but when Michael Jordan signed a deal with Nike in 1984, the game of signature sneaker forever changed. Instantly every brand was reaching to their top athletes to create a product that was co-labeled with a trusted logo and a marquee name. Basketball was THE sport footwear companies were after and getting a face to represent your logo was mandatory to make it in the competitive market. Adidas, Converse, Reebok, New Balance, Avia, LA Gear, and even KSwiss got their name into the NBA and NBA player’s names on their shoes. While some brands had their chosen one, players names began to become ubiquitous with the products they wore. For years, Charles Barkley played in the same Air Force basketball shoes many other players wore, but on the streets, they were known simply as the Barkleys. Slowly Nike added his jersey number to the shoes on heel tabs, added “CB” to the end of the product name, before eventually giving Sir Charles a full fledged line of products named after him. What once was the pinnacle, flagship model, today the signature sneaker is no longer. For years a brand would have only one or maybe two signature athletes in the NBA as the face of the brand, but soon brands learned that a signature line of product could become a beast of its own that would become stronger than their #2 competition. In 1997 Nike created the Jordan Brand franchise that had its own line of shoes and apparel, but also its own marketing, public relations, and product development divisions. Essentially, a new brand was formed and born from the success of a signature line. Within a couple years, Nike Basketball would have a total of 9 NBA and 1 WNBA Players with signature shoes. In today’s game, draft day is known by many as endorsement day. As names are called from the podium, contracts are filled out with deals from car companies, soft drinks, and of course footwear brands. Going high in the draft means many great things for these young players and for some, a signature sneaker deal. Consider this, from 2002-2005 draft classes 5 signature sneaker lines were born including 3 from 2003 alone. The 2003 draft class was recruited heavily by sneaker companies and signature shoe deals were inked with LeBron James (Nike Basketball), Carmelo Anthony (Jordan Brand), and Dwyane Wade (Converse). Lately, there has been some talk of how significant a signature sneaker is in the marketplace. While a product takes on all the positives of a player, the negatives come along with it. This couldn’t have been better illustrated when off court troubles for Kobe Bryant sent Nike scrambling to rename what would have been his first Nike signature shoe the Huarache 2k4. It would be another two years until Nike would try again with a Kobe Bryant signature sneaker that ultimately ended up on clearance outlet racks for as cheap as $19.99. Taking the safe route, many brands have opted to create “team” shoes that what would be signature caliber athletes collectively wear. For the 2006-07 season, Adidas Basketball had a large roster with six signature sneakers in the basketball category. The following year, the brand down sized to have two team shoes and one signature shoe worn by these same athletes and ended the six year run of the Adidas T-Mac. Last week when we reported the news that Dwyane Wade left Converse to join Jordan Brand, there were two responses we continued to receive. First was the rejoice of DWade joining JB and the second was asking if he would receive a signature shoe with Jordan Brand. Dwyane Wade is in many ways the biggest star and arguably the best player to play for Jordan Brand since the man himself. While many of us were told to debate between LeBron and Kobe for the MVP, DWade was busy having statistically the best year of his career with 30.2 points, 7.5 assists, and 5.0 boards a game in his first full season in three years. All of this came after the summer where he helped lead the US to gold including his incredible 27 point performance in the gold medal game. Oh yeah, and that NBA Finals MVP performance in 2006? Something along the lines of legendary. Much more than his accomplishes on court, the man Wade is off the court is just as honorable. Dwyane actively works with a handful of charities and philanthropic movements that help people of his hometown of Southside Chicago, Miami, and beyond. Last year on Christmas Eve, he even purchased a South Florida woman a new house when her nephew accidentally burned it down. Catching the attention of the game’s greatest, Michael Jordan recently stated, “In his short time in the league, Dwyane has transformed himself into one of the game’s best and is the embodiment of leadership both on and off the court, a signature trait of our athletes. As the Jordan franchise approaches its silver anniversary, Dwyane will become a pinnacle member of the Jordan roster poised to help lead the Brand for years to come.” Ultimately Jordan Brand has a major decision to make. Does the brand create a Dwayne Wade line of footwear under the Jordan Brand label like they have done with Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul, or do they have Wade represent the brand’s marquee Air Jordan in PE colorways like they have done with Ray Allen and RIP Hamilton? Seeing that Dwyane Wade has accomplished a vast amount of accolades and is now arguably the best player on Jordan Brand, does he deserve a signature model? On the contrary, are signature sneakers important as they once were? Let us know what your thoughts on signature sneakers and if Wade is deservant of one. |

And btw he has one of the strongest fan followings in the league and when he was on converse i saw dudes wearing his shoes everywhere. every night this dude goes out and beasts on other teams, damn straight he deserves his own shoe!

Wade deserves his own shoe, not to mention that after the 09-10 season people will no longer sleep on Wade; being that the heat(which will have plenty of cap money) or wade will make some big moves by surrounding him with the pieces to win another ring. This means he will eventually have the top jersey sales again and very possible shoe sales. It would be very wise for Jordan Brand to consider the future and start by giving him a signature shoe by all-star weekend 2010.

ive been a fan of wades every since his rookie year in the nba and now that he has left converse for jordan brand, it couldnt be any other better look for him than jordan…..hes one of the most exciting players in the league to watch and already has a championship, nba finals mvp, olympic gold….etc. so i say if give cp3 and melo their own signature line then they most definitly will have to give “the flash” his own line of jordan shoes….HANDS DOWN!!

Hey, I want to know where you found some Zoom Kobe Is for $19.99. Because I owned 3 pairs and they were by far the best performing shoe I ever played ball in. In a SoleCollector article they said the shoe was unrivaled by the competition and could go down as one of the best ever (not they weren’t talking style, just performance). I can’t find them for that cheap online. They don’t look the best and they won’t be a classic but for an amazing shoe twenty dollars is ridiculous.

I know this sounds odd… but I think Ray Allen is the franchise player for Jordan Brand. Even though D-Wade is better as a complete player and will market better, Ray Allen is probably the better choice. Heck, one could argue that Derek Jeter is the quintessential Jordan player. Multiple championships and above and beyong most starting shortstops today (and he’s 35 or 36!). Hurts as a Mets fan to say that, too…
But, back to the topic, I think it’d be cool to see D-Wade in those Air Jordan X Retro’s coming out in 2010 for the upcoming season… 1

just to clarify about the kobe issue, only casual, non-sports, basketball “fans” made a big deal about that. oh yeah, and white people, because to them, when you are accused, that means that you are guilty. yes, i am confused too. but, oj, michael jackson, r. kelly, etc. (ok, maybe r. kelly was a bad example, but he isnt in jail, is he?). the point is that real basketball fans knew whose shoe that huarache was, and i have heard that it was the highest selling bball shoe ever. they even made them into cleats. most importantly, besides the huarache 2k8s, jordan xix’s, and hyperdunks, these were the most comfortable bball shoe ever (besides teh bottom falling off, lol). his first shoe was on clearance racks not bc it was Kobe, but because the shoe was pretty weak… just like the jordan xviiis were at clearance racks because they were garbage. everyone loves chis paul, but his shoes never ever sell, bc they are ugly…

I think when your on a Jordan Brand line its not as important to have a signature sneaker as opposed to wearing retros in your team colors. The retros will last forever and will always be better then any team shoe that any player now or from here on out the any player will ever have.

But I think instead of having the wade 1 or something corny like that he should bring some respectability to the signature jordan sneaker since nobody in the league is really wearing those they should just have the main jordan sneaker be Wades signature without calling it the Wade. It’d be an honor but I don’t see anyone on the Jordan line more deserving. And if someone else comes along give them the honor. I do wanna see some retros in the miami heat c/w.

In my opinion signature shoes aren’t anywhere near as important as they used to be. Back in Jordan’s day when they dropped everyone bought them regardless of how they felt about their look because they were the new Jordans. Same to an extent with Barkley, Penny, Griffey, Grant Hill, etc. hell I remember seeing some of my boys with the ugly ass Olajuwon Spauldings on and swearing they were nice just cause they f**ked wit the dream. Lebron and Kobe have started to bring the signature lines back to where they once were, but outside of those 2 who really cares about the new Iverson’s, T-Mac’s, Jeter’s, etc. Part of the reason is because for about a 5-6 year period if you had 3 good games per season, a shoe company would bless you with a signature shoe line and half the cats were bums! So, people such as myself stopped caring, either the shoes were hot or they were wack regardless of who wore them, or whos name was on them. With that being said, if Vin Baker can receive a signature shoe from JB, D Wade better get one! He is arguably the MVP, and was the best player representing the states last summer. Statistically, personally, and leadership wise on and off the court D Wade represents what having a signature line is all about. Honestly, seeing some Heat color PE’s like Derek Anderson had back in the day would be a good look, but D Wade and Derek Anderson should never be in the same convo (unless he doesn’t get a signature line and the convo is who had the hotter PE’s). I just hope they give him something halfway decent, because unfortunately in today’s shoe game your name only gets you so far.

Hell i know his sales if the shoe is STR8 can’t be any worse than what the Melos& CP3 are doing and how many of us got sneakerheads got player edition in the collection without paying major $$$$$$. D. Wade deserves to have his own signature shoe. Jordan brand is a great brand dont get me wrong but I think he should have his own signature shoe with nike and build his own brand like Kobe & Lebron cuz hes that good of a player. I THINK DWAYNE DOES DESERVE A SIGNATURE SHOE BUT ONLY IF IT MATCHES THE CALIBER OF HIS ON COURT GAME AND VICE VERSA. THE GREAT THING ABOUT MJ AND HIS SIG SHOE THAT ADDED TO THE AURA AND LEGEND OF THE BRAND IS THAT JORDAN’S GAME WAS DOPE AND INNOVATIVE AND SO WERE HIS KICKS.
HIS SNEAKERS WERE ASSOCIATED WITH GREAT MOMENTS IN HIS CAREER. CAN’T SAY THE SAME FOR TOO MANY OTHERS, ESPECIALLY KOBE OR CARMELLO. MJ’S GAME WAS TIGHT CONSISTENTLY. SO WHEN YOU PUT ON A PAIR OF JORDAN’S YOU FELT LIKE YOU WERE TAKING PART IN HIS GREATNESS. PUT OUT SOME DOPE SHOES FOR LEBRON AND HE CAN’T MAKE IT TO THE FINALS. A BIT OF THE AURO AND ALLURE IS GONE.

Let’s call a spade a spade, Nike, Converse, and JB are one company, just different divisions.
Converse is not cool. Jordan Brand is cool. D-Wade is not selling, although Wade was the NBA’s leading scorer. But a signature JB D-Wade would sell, mostly because it’s JB.
I strongly suspect Wade was moved between Nike divisions to sell more shoes. That said, his signature shoe will happen again, just in the different division.

D-Wade has long deserved a solid signature shoe. No disrespect to LeBron…but all he has are highlights, Wade has a big old massive bright & blingin’ ring…that he EARNED. Mj’s theory is that most of todays youngsters are given everything before they’ve earned it, which will ultimately hurt the game. If that’s Mj’s opinion, D-Wade is the answer. Wade comes out every night to win, he plays hurt, sick & sometimes wins games by pure will…and he hasn’t once complained. You give Wade a Pippen or a Malone and I guarentee you he’ll be collecting more rings.
I just hope Wades signature shoe isn’t full of crap like those ugly CP3’s (with denim & over-used patent leather…and all of the other unnecessary $hit). Jordan Brand needs to simply their designs this year…because they were runner up to Nike’s LeBron & Kobe signature shoes last season.

If it was me I would want to wear pe colorways and jave my own signiture shoe. I don’t think signature shoes are important, but to me some of camelo and pauls signature shoes shouldn’teven have hit shelves. If dowes get a signature shoe I hope it’s a desencent looking shoe and not some ugly shoe with the jumpman logo on it. To me it kinda dosent matter as long as he’s with jordan brand
