Sneaker Shots: “White Men Can’t Jump”
Posted by Matt Halfhill | Jul 16, 2009 Nike pulled inspiration from the film White Men Can’t Jump for the initial release of the Nike Hyperize. While it can be debated how much of a classic the film was, one can’t deny the serious lineup of footwear was in the movie. Nike brought their A-game when it came to product placement getting their top basketball sneakers from ‘90 and ‘91 on the feet of not only the main characters played by Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes, but also on many of the extras hanging out wearing great kicks.
Maybe it was an excuse to grab some popcorn and watch the film again, but none-the-less we have assembled the top Nike sneaker shots from White Men Can’t Jump. Click here to check out what made the cut. |

That was Dwayne in A Different World TV show in the Jordan jersey, I remember him saying “we’re going Sizzler” to Sidney Dean (WesleySnipes), and on the spin off of theCosby Show, he wore some Jordans too, that was about the same time Fresh Price of Bel-Air was on with Will Smith, and Will wore some awesome Js too… man, those were the days!!!

yeah i had a homeboy who got put in the hospital for his starter jacket and hat to match. i think they got him for his jordans but can’t remeber which ones. i remember dudes who shoot dudes for their gear and rock with the gun/stab holes in it. complete insanity. supply and demand being all out of wack and the rise of bootleggers have completely killed that era though.

we highlighted the best Nike shoes since Nike paid homage to the film. Converse, Reebok, LA Gear, and even K-Swiss were in the film, but none of those brands have done a WMCJ release.

You cats crack me up - criticizing for folks actually wearing their kicks. Saw a guy a couple of weeks ago with well-worn Mars IVs. You know what? They looked good! They looked like they did in the late 80’s / early 90’s. They looked good - looked more ‘retro’ then all of those mantel-pieces cats brag about here.

I snuck into the theatre as a kid to see this movie, everyone of my friends quoted this for years afterwards. I bought the Command Force’s after seeing this… well my mom bought them for me after I begged her for months!

Being 24, I remember these days… Back when Jordans & Starter jackets was the ish and dudes would damn-near get beat down by haters if they were stuntin’ too hard on folks… Back when the original Griffeys were around (some of ya’ll are younger than the Griffeys & Carmines)…. These days, I retire some of my older J’s to permanent basketball-only status. Mostly my XIV’s (cuz they’re comfortable) and my white white\red X’s…

I dont play basketball because i really do suck. Im only 5′3″ and i cant dribble with my left hand (Lol) so yes I am VERY wack at basketball, but I cant make a comment on a dirty shoe I dont care if they BRED 3’s. Man……the Nike Air Command Force would do very well as a retro today.
With the recent trend of ultra high tops, this shoe would sell well. It was always a sick shoe to begin with. Nike never gave it the love that it deserves.

^ There was one scene where two of the dudes had on the Infrareds. You have to remember, back then, the Air Jordan was the top Nike Basketball sneaker. They wanted that shoe pushed like nothing else today.
