Throwback Thursday: Nike Air Unlimited
Posted by Matt Halfhill | Sep 3, 2009 Lately both the sports and sneaker world has been counting down the days until Michael Jordan is inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, but MJ is not the only great being honored next week. David Robinson will also be honored next week by the sports world, but even though the Admiral never had a signature shoe, he still wore his share of amazing sneakers.
We have shown some of the great sneaker David Robinson has worn in past Throwback Thursdays including the Air Force 180 Pump, Air Command Force, and Air Force V, but this week we celebrate the shoe #50 wore while setting his personal best. This week we celebrate the Nike Air Unlimited - the shoe that Robinson wore during the 1993-94 season and most importantly while putting up a ridiculous 71 points. True it was against the Clipps and true the team fed him the ball play after play to help David win the scoring title, but one can’t take away from his incredible performance. The Nike Air Unlimited was unlike any other basketball shoe by Nike. Sure, other shoes such as the Nike Air Jordan VIII and the Nike Air Raid had the dual cross straps, but what about another ankle and heel strap? Yes, for those playing the home game, that’s 4 straps giving even big men like David Robinson the ankle protection they need. The shoe had so many straps that included in the box was an instruction booklet telling you in what order to lace and strap up. Almost a year ago we posted the Nike Air Carnivore on Throwback Thursday which got nothing but the highest praise from readers. Coincidence or convenience the Air Carnivore will return in 2010. If you think the Nike Air Unlimited should return click here to voice your opinion! UPDATE: Just found a few pairs of the Nike Air Unlimited on eBay… |

I forgot my boy Grant Hill wore them his last year at Duke. They were super fresh the championship game against Arkansas. Let the Nike reps see this post of response. It seems like they bring out shoes from way back but forget the hottest joints that sold the most.
Oct 23, 2009 at 11:06 am

Sep 13, 2009 at 10:44 pm
Yes. My favorite shoe of all time. I remember i saw these on David Robinson (who was my favorite all time player) and I thought wow, what are those ? I saw two people in my high school with them and I had to have em. I was 13 didnt work so no cash. I started mowing grass in my neighborhood and went out and bought these. got them on sale. Everyone always stared at them. I couldnt believe it.
I miss those shoes. I then saw the Air 2 Strong come out and noticed they used the anti inversion strap and velcro lock on the side. The Air 2 Strong’s had a new redesigned Air Strong look with a Air Max CB94 midsole and outsole and the Air Unlimited Anti Inversion ankle strap and lock.
Yes that teal was because the old Spurs logo had teal in it. I definitely hope this Nike shoe is brought back.
Sep 12, 2009 at 2:09 pm
fire!!!!! hope they re-release them..for sure gona cop oif they come out.
Sep 9, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Sep 9, 2009 at 2:17 am
Nike needs to bring back these shoes. Fantastic combination of support and weight. I’ve had a lot of basketball shoes and these, by far, were the best.
Sep 8, 2009 at 10:16 am
I had these in 5th grade! David Robinson is my idol! bring it back!
Sep 8, 2009 at 5:22 am
I actually had these back in high school…one of the best basketball shoes I’ve ever had by a long shot, they were always envied on the court…got more respect than the Jordans of the time…no lie. Over the years they took a beating, I’d love to replace the with a fresh pair…I hope the retro them…
Sep 7, 2009 at 3:11 pm

bring it back especially the Black / Navy! and Cwebb should wear it and dunk over chuck again!
Sep 5, 2009 at 10:50 pm
Yes NIKE definitely needs to bring these joints back. I have the all black and the black and blueish grey joints still. Original boxes and all the 90’s were a great time for sneakers and if you werent old enough to remember then you really missed something.
Sep 5, 2009 at 1:38 pm
This is probably, until recently (Huarache 2k4 and Jordans), the best basketball sneaker Nike ever made in my opinion. I played both varsity years of basketball in these. Built pretty tough and you couldn’t twist your ankle in them. The lil brother to this show was the Air Prevail, which Penny, and a slew of other people wore back in the day. The Air 2Strong stole the ankle inversion tech from this shoe. Grant wore these in the wht/blk/roy colorway(same colorway i had) when Duke lost to the 40 minutes of Hell Razorbacks and Big Nasty. The remnents of the Fab Five also woreseveral different color ways in this shoe, most notably the all black adn the black and union grey. I believe Mourning rocked these once or twice in the white/black colorway. If Nike retros this shoe correctly, other than weight, this shoe could out perform many of the shoes that are on the market now. The shoe takes some getting used to to wear, because the air unit used in the heel actually pushes up into the shoe, giving you an instant point of impact cushioning in the heel. I doubt nike would put that unit in to the shoe for environmental issues. If they changed the max units on Barkleys, 95’s and other big bubble shoes, this one would undoubtedly get caught in the mix, because that unit was specific to this shoe and the previously mentioned prevail. This is my retirement shoe. I want all the OG’s x 2, plus any really good colors. Nike will surely whore these in dumb ass colors, but they are definitely a must have, even if not done to OG specs. This shoe carried a nice price tag back in the 90’s and thank God I worked for Footlocker in HS. If the Carnivores are coming then hopefully these wont be too far away. Thanks Nicekicks on putting the spotlight on this shoe, I hope Nike is paying attention. I’ve been waiting since i had to retire the pair i had in 97 to get these again. Oh and for you youngsters out there, the reason for the Teal color on these was because of the old Spurs logo, that had Teal, orange and pink in the back ground.
Sep 5, 2009 at 12:54 pm
hope these are retroed
Sep 5, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Now, like Spike Lee DTRT Nike and bring these back also i see the carnivores are coming in 2010 and so should these and don’t forget about the C Webb colorway the fab 5 was sporting back in day.

Sep 5, 2009 at 5:05 am
Please Nike..RETRO IMMEDIATELY!!!
Sep 5, 2009 at 3:45 am
CWebb wore these as a rookie with the Warriors and dunked on Barkley in these. Very ironic because the fab five were more known for wearing Barkleys first signature shoe (Black Air Max w/black socks) than he was. Props to Robinson, Barkley and Webber for holding the torch for all non-Jordan Nikes in the early 90’s. Bring them all back.

Not for me but big props to The Admiral. One of the best players to have ever played and one of the few that have ever had a quadruple double. I remember that 71 pt outburst like it was yesterday. Awesome, awesome player.

Sep 4, 2009 at 6:28 am
I had these in grade school. I don’t remember the instruction booklet though. I wish I can go back and relive the buying process for the kicks I had as a kid.

Sep 4, 2009 at 1:00 am
Those are my size yo… Good price just to bad they in Japan…
Sep 4, 2009 at 12:59 am
I had this same exact colour back in ‘94 and my homeboy had the black and blue suede colour. These were extremely nice and not too heavy or bulky. The only drawback was that the toebox got creased to sh!t and the leather scuffed very easily, plus you had to be careful about puncturing the underside on sharp objects. But these shoes were real techy goodlooking shoes, I’d be 1st in line to cop a retro. Hope they return.
Sep 4, 2009 at 12:18 am
