Detroit-based sneaker retailer Two 18 is up next for a collaboration on the Air Jordan 2 Low that’s set to drop this month.
But the shoe serves a higher purpose as it draws from both Detroit and Flint.
“[It’s] just a piece of Detroit, our story, that we matter, we’re here, we’ve always been here,” said Two 18 owner and artist Roland ‘Ro Spit’ Coit in an interview. “I wanted to show that this is the color of the tainted water and as we move forward we want it to get back to clean clear water,” he added.
In addition to bringing attention to Flint, Michigan, (which did not have clean, drinkable water from April 2014 to June 2016), the Motor City is embedded into the shoe’s storytelling with a Detroit postcard on the box and maps of Detroit found on the shoe’s insoles and wrapping paper.
The sneaker features a nubuck upper using different shades of brown on the base and on the overlays with blue and red trim featured throughout. Co-branding is expected throughout the sneaker with a sail midsole and translucent outsole finishing off the sneaker.
