At one point in time, the University of Miami was one of the premier college institutions in America. With an utterly dominant football team, glorious beaches and Miami’s ever so vibrant nightlight, the campus of UM seemed to be the ultimate destination. However, as of late, times have changed a bit for the once mighty institution, as athletic scandals and subpar performances has robbed this program of its once vaunted mystique. However, UM has made headlines today as the iconic university has made the surprising switch over to adidas. With the Hurricanes’ Nike contract expiring August 31, 2015, athletic director Blake James saw fit an opportunity to indulge on new opportunities with the Three Stripes insignia.
Nice Kicks has confirmed with sources close to the deal that adidas offered the University of Miami a deal worth over $30 Million that would be spread across eight years. With this new deal in place, the Hurricanes end their 27-year relationship with Nike, a relationship in which built the foundation for college programs to be endorsed by one singular footwear brand. While the ‘Canes may be down on their luck in regards to athletic power rankings, this coup by adidas is just the latest power move by the iconic footwear brand.
