Ever since signing with Under Armour during the fall of 2013, Stephen Curry and the brand have together enjoyed a meteoric rise.
Curry has gone on to win two NBA MVP awards — last season’s in unanimous fashion — along with a NBA championship, countless leaguewide accolades and several record-setting marks. He also single-handedly shifted the trajectory of the brand’s Basketball category, carrying the hoops business from just $30 Million in annual revenues to lofty projections now looking to top the $200 Million threshold for the upcoming season.
This weekend in Oakland, Stephen will formally introduce his third signature sneaker with the brand, having already set the bar incredibly high with his accomplishments in the last two models. While the initial two signature designs represented an easy evolution in design, the Under Armour Curry 3 looks to take a sharp shift. Most notably, the prominent Under Armour logo has been removed from the collar along the clean bonded and layered upper.
The shoe once again sits atop a Charged Cushioning foam midsole, though this year’s chassis extends up through the heel, doubling as a lockdown counter. Through the upper, you’ll notice a series of bonded layers atop a mesh body. The fabric along the lateral side, dubbed “Threadborne,” actually takes inspiration from the supportive-yet-flexible lightweight materials found in parachutes. Along the midfoot and through the outsole, the support structures have been upgraded for the Curry 3, with carbon fiber wings aiming to lock the foot in.
Though last year’s Curry Two model featured a Speedform upper, for the third edition we once again see the return of Anafoam, last seen on the entire upper of the Curry One. Tying back into the mesh-based fit material, the launch colorway of the Curry 3 incorporates the SC Camo print seen on the very first colorway of Stephen’s debut signature model that he wore on court.
While Stephen is of course known for adding his own trademark “I Can Do All Things…” handwriting onto his sneakers before each game, the phrase is already added onto the heel of the shoe for some emphasis. Other signature details include a Bay Bridge-inspired traction pattern through the forefoot, as well as “TCC” nods in the pivot point and lace tips, a reference to Stephen’s hoops pillars of “Trust – Commitment – Care,” that he also has tattooed on his inner left wrist.
