Jerry Lorenzo‘s wide ranging design influences are often centered in either religion or sport– intricate parts of his life both past and present. In the case of his newly released Fear of God 1987 Basketball Sneakers, late 80’s hoops culture is clearly the driving force.

A new video detailing a behind-the-scenes look at his pop-up shop at the Back Door Bottega in Bologna, Italy, provides insight to the collection and its uniquely personal inspiration.

The late 80’s Boston Celtics were a force in the NBA. They won championships, rivaled with Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers and, to a certain degree, defined an era of on-court style with iconic uniforms and almost identical sneaker choices. Even when wearing opposing brands, the Celtics all donned white and black sneakers. Fear of God’s collection riffs of off that uniformity while also reimagining warm-up tops, shorts and more. The shop is filled with sports memorabilia, classic Air Jordans, and basketball heritage that informs Lorenzo’s design aesthetic.
