It’s often understated just how great Scottie Pippen was throughout his Hall of Fame NBA career. Which is something you never hear when discussing one of the top 50 players in NBA history. Pippen, though, played alongside who many believe to be the best player to ever pick up a basketball — Michael Jordan. And when that guy is your running mate much of your career, lines tend to get blurred and appreciation in totality becomes largely diminished.
During Game 2 of the 1993 NBA Finals against then MVP Charles Barkley and the Phoenix Suns, Pippen stepped out of Jordan’s all-encompassing shadow for a masterful all-around performance culminating in just the 12th triple-double in NBA Finals history. Pip’s stat line read 15 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists, and 1 game-saving block on a Danny Ainge three-pointer that helped the Bulls take a 2-0 lead against the Suns. Chicago would go on to win the championship that year to complete their first three-peat.
To celebrate Pippen’s championship pedigree, Nike’s “Champions Think 16” pack includes his Air Maestro II in the shoe’s original construction (not the adored Kith variation). The pair releasing isn’t, however, the colorway Pippen wore while recording that famed Finals triple-double. He actually donned this style during his MVP performance in the 1994 All-Star Game the following season.
Expect the Nike Air Maestro II “Trifecta” on May 10. Pricing details have not been announced.
