Nike doesn’t often miss when it comes to advertisements. Aside from sneakers, it’s one of the things that makes Nike, well, Nike.
In the not so distant past, there was the moving Colin Kaepernick “Just Do It” ad. Featuring many of Nike’s biggest and newest athletes, Kaep’s ad was far more than just a commercial; it was a call to action. In contrast, Kyrie Irving’s new clip leans into a family narrative that orbits fatherhood — what it means, its basis in sacrifice, and how one can affirm said sacrifice through fulfilled promise.

The ad features Irving and his youthful father — who was once a great ball player himself — playing a game of one-on-one. Kyrie’s pop, still spry, with form and function that implies he once “had it,” gave up his pro ambitions so Kyrie could live his. Circling this touching story, the clip echoes Kyrie’s words: “My dad sacrificed his dream, so I could live mine.”
The commercial comes on the heels of the Nike Kyrie 5 release, in which Kyrie wears the “BLK MGC” edition. His dad laces up the Nike Kyrie Low “Floral,” respectively.
