It’s been 14 years since Nike produced its first Black History Month-inspired sneaker. In that time there’s been many, some of which include the implementation of Jordan Brand. Yet no matter the sneaker or shirt or pair of shorts, one thing has been consistent — the theme.

Meant to honor African Americans, their accomplishments, service and even the injustices they have faced, the affectionately titled BHM collection has always been more than a product; it’s a reminder that African American heritage and achievement in sports matter and should be celebrated.

For 2019, Nike takes greater strides to honor national African patterns and Afro-futurism in sport. Featuring the NikeCourt Flare 2.0, Nike LeBron 16, Nike PG3, Nike Kyrie 5 and the Nike KD 11, each highlights bold notions of Pan Africanism coupled with the recognition of how athletes from all backgrounds are embraced and become champions of their local communities.

“In sport, there’s a movement happening where athletes are inviting others to discover the full side of who they are, through finding their voices and improving their communities,” spoke Jonathan Johnsongriffin, Senior Creative Director for Nike Basketball. “We wanted that movement to inspire this year’s design.”

Beginning earlier this month, Nike launched its Future Varsity program — a leadership training platform for 14 young African Americans who are creating positive change in their communities. Participants will be paired with mentors both within and outside of Nike to help advance their lives, their causes.

Nike has also partnered with two organizations, PeacePlayers International and MENTOR, to expand opportunities for youth and their communities.

The Nike BHM 2019 collection will begin its release cycle on January 21 with the LeBron 16 “Equality.” On February 1, all other Nike Basketball sneakers will release. The Air Force 1 Utility will finally launch on February 20.
