The New Balance 990 has become a global icon, heralding as the Boston-based brand’s most significant sneaker to date. First released in 1982, the sneaker has seen five different versions, all of which have made the series popular with consumers across all spectrums. Now, New Balance has announced the release of the MADE 990 Version Series.
The upcoming MADE 990 Version Series pays tribute to the iconic 990, displaying the brand’s cultural roots and long historical relevance. To celebrate, the series begins at the 990’s humble beginnings with the release of the ’90s icon New Balance 990v1. Every pair’s sole, duster bag, and insert will feature an image of the clock tower at the New Balance factory in Lawrence, MA. Ruby accents will round out the design.
Going forward this year, the New Balance 990v2, 990v3, 990v4, and 990v5 will release as well with ruby accents. Additionally, the brand will also be bringing back the 990v2 and 990v3 in the core black, grey, and navy colorways.
“There are only a select number of shoes in our industry that can be referred to as iconic, the 990 is one of them,” says Chris Davis, CMO and Sr. Vice President of Merchandising. “From Washington D.C., to Tokyo, to Milan, the 990 has been a pillar of the New Balance brand for nearly forty years. Respected by sneaker connoisseurs around the world and attracting new consumers to our brand, the 990 series represents the pinnacle of Made in USA craftsmanship and an understated elegance that transcends the cyclical nature of trend.”
