adidas Scocer’s newest iteration on the iconic Predator line brings something to the pitch that has never been seen before. The initial appearance of the adidas Predator 20 Mutator may seem familiar to players as the 20 builds on what we have come to know about Predator: a high collar and low-cut front echoing the striking nature of the world’s most dangerous creatures.
Within seconds, however, it becomes apparent that something is vastly different by design. The boot has an almost-reptilian surface that highlights the newest innovation developed for the Predator line called DEMONSKIN.
DEMONSKIN is a layer of 406 textured spikes that span the forefoot of the boot. The design of DEMONSKIN was informed by research, a computer algorithm, and extensive prototype testing. DEMONSKIN promises players enhanced touch, control, and spin while striking the ball.
“We looked at the different areas where you kick the ball, places where you want to amplify speed and grip on the ball. That’s why the spikes are the way they look. There are different shapes and sizes,” states lead designer Arnau Sanjuan Roman.
This design did not come quickly, as you can imagine.
“It took approximately 2 years since we started with the first idea. We started to create some sketches based on some of the data we collected from our testers. It was a step-by-step process. Based on those sketches, and initial inputs, we started to create some prototypes to test. It is always a long way.”
“The first time when the testers saw the boot it was like ‘Wow!’ because most boots have a homogenous surface. So having a sticky, rubber-like surface on the boot actually surprised them. We had Rakitic from Barcelona come to our lab in Herzo and some of his comments were ‘I need to get used to this to learn how to use it.’ It was a sensation he had not experienced before,” recalls Roman.
While the Predator 20 Mutator may take some getting used to, it is exciting to see adidas push the game forward, hopefully leading to iconic moments for future generations of footballers and fans alike.
Additional updates on the Predator 20 Mutator are on the Sockfit collar which is slightly higher than before, providing increased lockdown. The boot’s two-plate stud configuration provides the wearer with not only a lighter overall boot and maximum movement, but it boasts a 360 design that allows the upper to wrap under the foot.
You can catch the Predator 20 Mutator in action as it will be worn by Paul Pogba in the EPL, Becky Sauerbrunn in the NWSL, and Miles Robinson in the MLS.
Predator 20 Mutator will be available online at adidas.com, adidas stores, and select retailers on January 28, 2020.
