Tuesday: Day 7

Hold the quotes and wisdom, today is about the materials.

Today was crammed full of information. It was some sort of materials buffet and one of the most glutinous I can remember. On the second day of materials we covered both P.U. as well as leather.

Suzette walked us through the process of PU and explained differences in application and result. It was really enlightening being brought up to speed on how slight differences in texture and application can completely change the result. There’s a bunch of opportunity in the material to work with.

Phase two was leather. It’s amazing to find out how much has gone into the development of manufacturing leather. Leather’s an ancient art that is still extremely relevant to this day. It’s versatility as a natural product makes it so interesting and useful.

D’Wayne would say later, “If the material workshop didn’t change your design you weren’t listening.” Without a doubt he was right. For many of us, today completely changed our directions and the way we look at shoes.
