Adidas, while thriving in a manner for which we’ve grown accustom, is in dire need of a hit. A catchy song for pop radio. A walk-off in the bottom of the 9th. A Game 7 buzzer beater.

This win could come in any form. Yet, given their push to only produce sneakers with recycled materials by 2024 and challenge industry standards through 4D innovation, this towering new sneaker should feature one if not both of those positioning tools of the future.

The newly revealed adidas ZX 4000 4D has both the form and finesse to be that hit sneaker the German powerhouse so badly needs. Although not produced from recycled materials (yet), the sleek low-cut model is upheld by an inventive 4D designed sole unit. Above is a paneled upper with design language easily likened to Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 label.

There’s an undeniably futurist aesthetic that leaps from this sample of the ZX 4000 4D. The lines and curves are progressive and forward coupled with the angular framing that’s helped both adidas and its aforementioned subsidiary thrive in recent years. But more than anything technical, the shoe’s visual appeal is striking — they just look great.

With only a first look at a test pair, there’s little doubt that this upcoming adidas shoe is one to watch. Does it have what it takes to be “the shoe” of the brand’s immediate future? Will it be priced and released accordingly to pull off such a feat? At present time it’s hard to forecast with any real accuracy. However, the excitement will only mount ahead of the shoe’s reported fall/winter 2018 release.
