Michael Jordan’s legendary NBA career didn’t get off to the start he would have hoped. During the 1985-86 season, Jordan broke a bone in his foot and missed 60 games. The Bulls would only win 30 games that year. Yet, Jordan was able to return to the team in March, helping the Bulls secure the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

In their first round series they’d face-off against the eventual champs, the Boston Celtics. Jordan averaged a ridiculous 43.7 points per game in the series, which includes his famed 63-point outburst. The Celtics would of course sweep the Bulls in three games, but Jordan’s unrelenting prowess was noted as was his ability to play without fear after recovering from injury.

The Air Jordan 1 “Wings” is inspired by his inner confidence and the understanding that hard work overcomes doubt. Outfitted in a black upper with antiqued gold undertone layer, Jordan’s wingspan marks the heel while the Wings logo rests beneath an icy outer.

Much like last year’s Air Jordan 12 “Wings” release, the shoe will benefit Jordan Brand’s Wings initiative — a program that promotes the importance of education around the globe and stands to inspire confidence in youth culture. The shoe will be limited to 19,400 pairs.

Expect the Air Jordan 1 “Wings” on May 17 at Jordan.com and select retailers.
