The year of 2002 was substantial for Jordan Brand with the return of Michael Jordan to the NBA a second time. In total, five models of Air Jordans released (1 new, 4 retros) including the Air Jordan 17 that released on Michael Jordan’s 39th birthday – February 17, 2002. The shoes were a major step up in price from the $160 Air Jordan 16’s to $200. A slumping economy following the 9/11 attacks caused very slow sales of the Air Jordan XVII at the full sticker price.
The Air Jordan 9 was the largest of the retro Air Jordans to release coming in 5 total colors. The high tops came in three colorways – White/Black-Red, Black/Olive (original colors) and White/Flint Grey-French Blue (retro).?? The Jordan 6 came in a new low top which was a first for the model having only come in the original high top in the past.?? Other retros that ended the year were the Air Jordan 7 and Air Jordan 1 that was the first and only retro Air Jordan 1 to remove the Nike Swoosh on the side replaced with a chrome Jumpman.
