With Stephen Curry, Cam Newton and Tom Brady on their roster, Under Armour has a slew of stars that they have successfully marketed and built their brand around. However while said stars have been a big boost to Under Armour’s recent success, the company still plays second or perhaps third and even fourth fiddle to Nike.
Under Amour CEO Kevin Plank recently spoke about the company’s underdog status in the sneaker market while making an appearance on NBC’s “Today Show.”
Here are some of the highlights of Plank’s interview:
On going up against Nike: “Big companies do what big companies do. They’ve got more money. When we run a commercial, we’ve got one shot. The person has to be great. It has to hit.”
Plank used to send a Christmas card saying, “You will know our name” to Nike’s Phil Knight.
More about competing with Nike: “I was pitting it as us versus them. To me, we were always on their radar; we were always in that fight. The obligation of brands is the freshest and newest; whoever makes the best products is going to win.”
Under Armour has come a long way from their early days and it clear to see from Plank’s passion for the company, they are going to keep trying to compete for Nike as long as they can.
