The passing of Virgil Abloh has sent heavy hearts through a multitude of industries and disciplines and Awake NY founder Angelo Basque is no exception to that. Basque and Awake have a continuing collaborative relationship with ASICS and they’ve teamed up on the ASICS GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 in which 100% of the profits will be donated to Virgil Abloh’s “POST-MODERN” scholarship.
“POST-MODERN” was created by Abloh in 2020, to support the next generation of Black fashion industry leaders. The mission of the scholarship fund is to champion inclusion and equity in the fashion industry to students of Black, African-American, or African descent. “POST-MODERN” just goes beyond just a check, but provides career support services and mentoring and has raised funds from brands such as evian, Louis Vuitton, Farfetch, and more.
The collaborative effort between Awake and ASICS features two colorways of the GEL-Kayano Trainer 21, a muted silver and cream colorway and a louder silver, teal, and orange colorway. A Mono-Sock design from the ’90s version of the Kayano is implemented with suede, nubuck, and perforated underlays. Awake branding is seen on the lateral side of the toe, and a forefoot and heel GEL cushioning system is utilized for comfort and impact protection.
The Awake x ASICS GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 is set to drop on Thursday, December 2nd exclusively in-store at Unknwn Miami from 5 to 7 PM EST. Check out the teaser photo from Awake below and for all the latest sneaker drop dates, check out our Sneaker Release Dates page.
