Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry now has his very own signature sneaker just 15 months after news broke of his endorsement deal with Under Armour. The Under Armour Curry One was unveiled at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda – the alma mater of Jason Kidd, Damian Lillard and comedian/actor Mark Curry. The latter played host at the unveiling event of the Curry One, alongside Stephen Curry himself and Dave Dombrow, the footwear vice president and creative director of Under Armour.
The Under Armour Curry One features the Baltimore, Maryland-based brand’s newest technology called Anafoam on the upper. The prefix of the word is a nod to the technology – comprised of its stretch textile molded with a foam compound – being able to anatomically form to the foot. The other first that is incorporated on Curry’s new shoe is UA’s Charged cushioning, which Under Armour states “will absorb impact and convert it into a responsive burst of explosiveness.”
At the event before a table of deconstructed Curry One samples, Stephen Curry and Dave Dombrow discussed the evolution of the shoe, explained the various inspirations behind it and detailed the working environment between themselves over the past year.
“The entire process resulted in about five meetings between us and Steph over the past year,” Dombrow said. “The first meeting was only supposed to last about an hour, but we ended up staying at his house for hours and had dinner with his family. That just speaks to how welcoming he is and how he values relationships and we drew inspiration from that.”
In addition to the family ties, the Curry One also features other cues, such as the quote “I can do all things,” which is the first part of the Bible verse Philippians 4:13 (other colorways will replace the verse with other stories), and“LEAD” and “MMTB” (Make My Team Better) on the lace tips.
“It’s really a dream come true to have my own signature shoe,” Curry said.” I never thought in a million years that I would be in this position and to see my family ties and beliefs incorporated is a blessing.”
The Under Armour Curry One will officially arrive at retailers for the first time during All-Star Weekend on February 13th, 2015 for $120 Six colorways, including a pair nicknamed the “Candy Rain,” which is inspired by his love for Sour Patch Kids, are scheduled to release throughout the coming months after the previously mentioned date.
