Before U.S. professional basketball was consolidated into one league, the NBA and ABA shared professional talent. However, that would come to a halt in 1976, when the two merged together. Coinciding in the same year, the Converse Pro Leather was also invented. Celebrating the 45th anniversary of the merger, Converse is releasing the Pro Leather “Birth of Flight.”

The high-cut silhouette was Julius “Dr. J” Erving’s sneaker of choice, worn as the former ABA and Philadelphia 76ers star took the newly founded NBA by storm. The pair features protruding Chevron logos that come by way of interchangeable Velcro pieces, which arrive in blue or red. A gold Star stamp is placed on the heel, while the ABA’s classic white, red, and blue basketball is embellished underneath.

This special Converse Pro Leather “Birth of Flight” is available now on Converse.com for $85.
