Adidas Originals today debuts their highly anticipated collaboration with American artist Daniel Arsham, whose affinity for archeology and 20th century cultural artifacts has made him one of the most renowned artist in the country.
Arsham and adidas approach their collaboration with artistic inspiration while utilizing the adidas New York, an archival running silhouette, as a vessel. Dressed in a deteriorated canvas fabrication, its Chalk White upper denotes frayed edges to appear raw and deconstructed.
Arsham then covers the shoe with subtle nods that ode to his love for discovery and hidden messages. Branding is very simplistic, screen-printed on each shoe’s tongue while the New York’s classic mesh midsole is treated with an ultraviolet ink print which, when illuminated by certain lighting, reads “THE PAST IS PRESENT.” Holistically, the shoe is meant to cement adidas as an enduring symbol of sportswear in the 20th century while equally shining a light on Arsham’s celebration of contemporary culture.
Look for the Daniel Arsham x adidas New York in limited numbers on July 22 for $180.
