Hip-hop historian and sneaker purist DJ Clark Kent is celebrating Black History Month by producing a collaborative sneaker with heritage brand K-Swiss. But if Clark was going to celebrate black history, he wanted to ensure that everyone knew the celebration of black lives doesn’t start and end in February.
“When K-Swiss asked me to do a project for Black History Month, the one thought I had was ‘Black History is everyday,'” said DJ Clark Kent. “I wanted to create a shoe that was simple, clean, premium, and straight to the point. The colors on the stripes represent OUR Black Power, Black Pride, and Black Beauty. It is my honor to share them with you.”
Inspired by the Pan-African flag, Kent outfits the Classic 88 silhouette in a simplistic white leather base smartly touched by black, green and red contrasts at the lateral and medial siding. Those colors speak truth to the black experience; the red telling of the blood that unites all people of black African ancestry; a black stripe lends light on black people whose existence as a nation, though not a nation-state, is affirmed by the existence of the flag; and a green stripe honors the abundance of natural wealth in Africa.
Look for the DJ Clark Kent x K-Swiss Classic 88 in men’s and women’s sizes tomorrow, February 20, exclusively at Foot Locker and KSwiss.com for $80 USD.
