Cultural Significance

The Reebok Shaq Attaq served as the first signature shoe for Shaquille O’Neal and also the first official signature shoe for a Reebok athlete. Shaq sported his own signature during his rookie season, an honor that would not be replicated by a Reebok athlete until Allen Iverson four years later. In his first season, O’Neal would wear the Shaq Attaqs en route to 1993 Rookie of the Year accolades, putting up 23 and 14 a night. A fan favorite, Shaq was also voted a starter for All-Star Game, the first rookie to attain such a role since Michael Jordan in 1985.

The retro release of the Shaq Attaq also marks Shaq’s return to Reebok. O’Neal left the brand in 1998 in pursuit of his own clothing line, and eventually footwear moves that would focus more on cost conscious products and target overseas markets. His return to Reebok was essential for the re-release of his signature line under the Classics label, as it allows the kicks to keep their namesake and sport the iconic Dunkman logo.
