Michael Jordan grew up in North Carolina making a name for himself at Laney High School and later at the University of North Carolina. After moving onto the NBA, Michael always showed his love for the state that raised him with everything from appearances in UNC Alumni games to UNC colorways of his signature shoes.
Air Jordan 5 “Grape”In 1988 the NBA expanded the league and gave the state of North Carolina its first NBA team with the creation of the Charlotte Hornets. Less than two years later we saw a nod to that with the “Grape” Air Jordan 5.
Fast forward many years to when Michael Jordan purchased the newly created Charlotte Bobcats after the Hornets moved out of town to New Orleans, at last, Michael Jordan was an owner of an NBA squad not far from where his whole journey began.
The story of MJ got even better when the Charlotte Bobcats became the Hornets in 2014 and in 2015 when it was announced that Nike had acquired the rights to the NBA jersey deal starting in 2017 the new buzz was whether or not MJ’s Charlotte Hornets would have a Nike Swoosh on their jerseys or the iconic Jordan “Jumpman” logo.
The rumors were confirmed in April of this year that in fact Michael Jordans’ Charlotte Hornets will be wearing Jordan branded jerseys starting in 2017 as part of the new NBA deal with Nike.
It all comes full circle.
