Kanye’s debut of the Air Yeezy 2 at Coachella has set the blogs ablaze. Will they have the same success as their predecessor? Today we look back at the introduction of the original Nike Air Yeezy. After murmurs of Ye having a collaboration in the works with Nike and a case of mistaken identity (Ato Matsumoto Cow Hide Boot), the rumors were put to rest when Kanye wore the original Air Yeezy to the 50th Annual Grammy Award ceremony. The head of the Grammy Family was right at home as Kanye won Best Rap Album, received the most nominations with eight, and took home four awards in total.
Yeezy rocked his first signature on stage performing “Stronger” with Daft Punk and an emotional rendition of “Hey Mama”. Days after the performance he told the world what the sneakers were with release information surfacing in the fall and an official drop the following spring. Ye went on to rock different makeups, performing at festivals and his Glow in the Dark Tour. The Grammy colorway never released but lives in sneaker glory.
