For years, sneakers have exponentially grown into different parts of the country inspiring a distinct style. The Cortez in East LA, Timbs in Queens and Foamposites in DC are just a few examples of iconic shoes that fit each city and its way of life. But what about cities that don’t necessarily have a distinct look? How does sneaker culture appear there?
Phoenix, home to over 1.5 million people, is traditionally known for its scorching temperatures while its heat on feet is looked over. However, a team of passionate shoe lovers are continually changing the dynamic in the city, even the state.
Back in 2012, these sneakerheads wanted to put Arizona on map with its very own sneaker convention after having to repeatedly go out of state for such events. The first Heated Sole took place at a local high school after striking a deal in which all proceeds of the show would go to the school’s athletic department if they were allowed to use the gym for one day. Once word got about a local sneaker show, they were able to fit over 60 vendors into the gym with over 1,000 people in attendance.
With the Super Bowl coming to The Grand Canyon State back in 2015, Heated Sole saw an opportunity to expand. They decided to team up with local brand Original Rufnek and popular store The Guest List and present The AZ Sneaker Bowl. The event was held in a Recreation Center the size of four full length basketball courts, with over 150 vendors and thousands attendees. This event brought out numerous athletes and celebrities such as the legendary Arizona Cardinal Darnell Dockett.
Shortly after, word about the event and its size reached the Phoenix Suns and they were invited to host the event at Talking Stick Resort Arena in downtown Phoenix. The Suns recognized the work of Heated Sole and wanted to embrace the connection sneakers and the game of basketball share. DJ Green Lantern, shooting guard Devin Booker, forward Marquees Chriss and forward PJ Tucker were all in attendance.
On Saturday, October 14th 2017, Heated Sole will host its eighth annual event in Talking Stick Resort Arena with Devin Booker in attendance. Tickets are only $20 and include a ticket to the opening night game where the Suns host the Portland Trailblazers. Vendor tables are now up for grabs for only $150 and are open to anyone that can relate to the sneaker culture. The event will also have its signature $1 raffle with some coveted heat such as the adidas “Zebra” 350, the Air Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard,” and many more.
