In continued partnership, Hibbett and Nike have introduced the F1RST STRING program, a philanthropic initiative dedicated to uplifting high school student-athletes by focusing on both academic and athletic development. The program, which kicked off with a $50,000 inaugural donation to Wenonah High School’s boys and girls basketball programs in Birmingham, Alabama, is designed to empower the next generation of student-athletes with financial support, career guidance, and mentorship opportunities.
Hibbett President and COO Jared Briskin expressed his enthusiasm for the program, saying, “We believe in the power of community to inspire, uplift, and create opportunities for young people to succeed both on and off the court.” Through F1RST STRING, Hibbett and Nike are contributing to boys’ and girls’ high school basketball teams and providing scholarships to one student from each team. The initiative goes beyond monetary aid, offering students a path to personal and professional growth through career development programs such as job shadowing opportunities at Hibbett’s Birmingham office.
The launch event for F1RST STRING coincided with the inaugural Bama in Boutwell basketball game, where Wenonah High School’s teams received the generous donation and a special surprise: new Nike Ja 1 shoes. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, present at the event, highlighted the program’s role in empowering local students and fostering community growth. Mayor Woodfin noted, “The partnership between F1RST STRING and Birmingham Promise…continues to foster the Birmingham community, ensuring students succeed on and off the court.”
“Athletics opens the door for many Birmingham City Schools scholars to find success after high school,” said Dr. Terry Lamar, Chief of Staff for BCS. “We welcome Hibbett and First String’s investment in the basketball program at Wenonah High School and scholarship support for some of our athletes. This is a true example of what companies in our area can do to help ensure an even brighter future for our students.”
The program has caught the attention of local media in Birmingham including WBRC which hosted Coach Trellice Moore and Hibbett VP of Marketing Sarah Wangaard who succccintly summarized the goal of F1RST STRING. “Changing the game for these kids and these coaches on and off the court.”
Coach Moore discussed how the contribution by Hibbett and Nike will help her student-athletes get more exposure with some of the funds supporting travel and food expenses as the team travels to tournaments in Memphis and Atlanta.
F1RST STRING reflects Hibbett’s long-standing commitment to supporting communities, and as Briskin adds, “Launching First String in our own backyard means a lot.” The program is set to continue in the coming years, extending its reach to more schools and student-athletes, inspiring success both on the court and in future careers.
