Earlier this year HBO Max launched a new competition-reality series called “The Hype,” in which 10 up-and-coming streetwear designers competed for a $150,000 cash prize, all while battling to get a co-sign from leaders in the industry. While the show was met with skepticism, many were pleasantly surprised by the way HBO executed the show, and found themselves tuning in week after week. The show has officially been renewed for season 2, making Justin Mensinger the reigning champ thus far.
Mensigner is a Chicago-based designer that won the first season of “The Hype” with his technical sewing, meaningful message, and ability to upcycle clothing. The Justin Mensinger x Reebok Collective “Pieces of Us” capsule collection is an extension of Mensinger’s commitment to keeping heart at the center of whatever he does. The limited edition collection is complete with six different sweatshirts that will be auctioned off on Charitybuzz. All of the proceeds from the auction will go to Reebok’s nonprofit partner BOKS, an organization that aims to instill positive physical and mental health practices into every child’s daily routine.
The sweatshirts come dressed in Mensinger’s signature patchwork aesthetic. The designs take pieces from members of the Reebok’s Collective own personal wardrobe including Broderick Hunter, Lazarus Lynch, Richie Shazam, Amrit Sidhu, Maxwell Pearce, and Kendra Oyesana. Using bits and pieces of different textiles, Mensinger upcycles the combined clothing to create a collection that is entirely new. Each sweatshirt is complete with its own mental health message, another marker of Mensinger’s signature style.
“I wanted the pieces in this collection to tie together cohesively but also have their own unique look and feel. Each piece of clothing that previously held someone’s energy and style came together to create a new story and new garment that someone else can enjoy,” said Justin Mensinger. “With the inspirational quotes gathered from our Reebok Collective members I was able to add messages that are universal reminders to each of us. I can’t wait for the world to see this collection.”
The auction for the Justin Mensinger x Reebok Collective “Pieces of Us” capsule collection will be hosted on Charitybuzz this upcoming January. The auction is entirely online and the sweatshirts will be awarded to the highest bidder. Be sure to keep up with @Reebok and @JustinMensinger for official updates on the auction’s opening.
