Before Game 2 of the 2018 NBA Finals during a practice session, LeBron James laced up something very unexpected. It was a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors. This is relatively normal considering the brand is a subsidiary of Nike who houses his signature collection. The unexpected element is the branding on said Chuck.
The one-of-one “bootleg” custom for James was a black Chuck featuring a smiley face and, more importantly, a Nike Swoosh. Produced by Mike Cherman of Chinatown Market, the parody themed shoe plays on juxtaposing symbolism. Black canvas construction and Sail colored midsole tooling are customary for the Converse staple. Yet it’s the branding seen on other foundational items that flips the ideology on its face.
