As far as sneaker culture is concerned, Louis Vuitton lives in footwear lore thanks to its collaboration with Kanye West just about a decade ago. In the time that’s passed, they’ve had a recent win with the Archlight but relatively speaking not many crave worthy kicks.

That narrative is changing with the appointing of Virgil Abloh to the label’s menswear line. Archival Avia references and low tops also taking from ’80s aesthetic have caught the attention of our site with the likes of A$AP Rocky and Don C already rocking said styles. What they appear to have coming next however is wilder and more hybrid in theory than any of the previously mentioned silos.

More Y2K than Y3, this new look from Louie sees DNA from all over the map. Silver tones and jelly detailing make this chunky runner reminiscent of styles seen in the late ’90s that are strikingly Skechers or Spencer’s Gifts. Just the same, the toe cap captures that of the adidas Samoa and the heel tab from that of the Air Jordan 3, while the wavy lace panelling pulls from the Osiris D3 in a way.

So, with Virgil at the helm will this LV shoe be the next big designer sneaker? Polarizing as they may be, smart money says yes. Assuming Abloh shows how to style them, baggy pants and all, this could be the start of a new wave. Or not. We’ll all have to wait and see.

UPDATE: A Black/Blue colorway was spotted by our friends at Hypebeast. Peep them below.
