To honor the PUMA Suede’s 50th anniversary, the sneaker company once again teamed up with Hong Kong artist Michael Lau for a new take on their iconic silhouette.
Similar to their first collaboration, Lau takes inspiration from sample sneakers that brands frequently produce during production. Also similar to the first collaboration, is the sneaker’s name — the Michael Lau x PUMA “SAMPLE SUEDE.”
This 50th anniversary of the Suede has a work-in-progress feel to it as the sneaker sports a grey themed colorway throughout the silhouette. PUMA’s signature Formstripe is crafted from a sample of fabric, which can also be found on the tongue. The sneaker is filled with a ton of intricate details as Lau’s signature aesthetic can be found everywhere.
“My connection to the PUMA Suede is that I am from that generation,” Lau said in a release. “It’s celebrating its 50th anniversary and that means we are all around the same age. Our generation really has seen the sneaker culture develop. From the 70s, 80s, 90s, all the way into the 2000s. It’s classic like me now. It was right there from when I was young, and was prevalent in the early formation of youth and street culture, and is still around. I’d say that makes the Suede pretty classic.”
The Michael Lau x PUMA “SAMPLE SUEDE” will be releasing on January 20th at select PUMA retailers and puma.com.
