words // Nick DePaula:
Every fall and throughout the course of the NBA’s regular season, basketball fans are often still getting used to seeing players in a new uniform. Whether it’s Kevin Love in Cleveland’s wine and gold, Rajon Rondo in Dallas or even Paul Pierce as a Wizard, some things take getting used to.
For everyone that’s been steadily following our constant Kicks On Court coverage, you may have noticed quite a few players around the league that switched sneaker brands. The norm these days is for players entering the draft to sign a 3-year shoe deal, meaning most of the 2011 Draft saw their rookie shoe deals expire this past fall.
Headlined by 2011 1st rounders Klay Thompson and Jimmy Butler, along with veteran floor general Kyle Lowry, there were definitely some notable brand switches on hand this season, as each player celebrated their first All-Star nods just a month ago. Some guys looked for more exposure (and straight cash) from overseas brands on their new deals, while others were forced to accept a simple merch deal that includes free shoes but no cash, after not living up to their rookie billing. (I am looking directly at you Wes Johnson.) As happens every fall, a few players turned down much higher offers from other brands to simply wear some sneakers they like, like LaMarcus Aldridge, who shunned a sizable bid from Peak so he could wear Js.
Check out all of the players that switched footwear brands this season below, and let us know in the comments section which player you think will have the biggest impact on their new company.
