Back in 1982, when New Balance first released the innovative 990 silhouette, it was filled with firsts for its industry. Most notably, the New Balance 990 was among the first $100 athletic sneakers, produced in nondescript grey pig suede and mesh. The shoe far surpassed initial sales projections and quickly became a staple to casual wearers and aficionados the same.
Following re-releases in 1998, 2012, and most recently in 2016, New Balance returns the time-honored style once again, this time as the 990v4 — modernized with contemporary technology for comfort and cool to carry the shoe’s masterful legacy forward.
Today, in 2018, New Balance’s limited edition 990v4 “1982” marks a union of two classic New Balance colorways – grey and navy – to create the exclusive release. The shoe’s upper is dressed in traditional premium grey pig suede and mesh alongside a navy tongue logo with “1982” scripted at the foxing.
In celebration of the New Balance 990V4 “1982” edition, the Cambridge-based brand will release 1,500 pairs of the limited edition shoe at its original $100 cost at select pop-up locations across the U.S. on Saturday, April 14. Take a closer look below and also find the seven Stateside retailers.
