To celebrate Black History Month, which is just around the corner, New Balance is readying a special iteration of its 990v5 model. Although the silhouette has taken a backseat compared to its 327, 992, and 2002R siblings, the New Balance 990v5 “BHM – My Story Matters” is looking to gain back the spotlight.
The forthcoming model boasts a color scheme that rightfully pays tribute to Black History Month, although no Pan-African flag is spotlighted. The sneaker does, however, feature a premium purple and beige suede construction, while the signature “N” logos have been given dark gilding. Earthy tones follow onto the mesh under and overlays, while a darker burgundy outlines the mid panels, as well as dresses the laces and outsole.
The New Balance 990v5 “BHM – My Story Matters” is slated to release on February 15 at select retailers and NewBalance.com for $175. The New Balance 574 “BHM – My Story Matters”, also scheduled for February 15 is set to drop for $90.
