While sneakers are widely recognized as artistic works of art within the culture itself, it’s often not chronicled as such to the world at large. However, the tide is beginning to turn, with many museums, appraisers and historical curators exploring sneakers as viable “art.”
The Brooklyn Museum, which currently houses more than 1.5 million works of art, recently unveiled their new exhibit entitled The Rise of Sneaker Culture. Curated by Lisa Small, the showing highlights the rise of value in sneakers and its widespread cultural appeal. From the foundational athletic shoe to others of a more sartorial presence, the exhibit notably vocalizes the intersect between cultural history and material culture, as referenced by Small herself.
