Nike’s annual Black History Month collection often serves as one of the brand’s most cherished offerings of the year. Celebrating African-American history and excellence, this year’s offering is a bit more focused as it calls out individuals and select moments in history that made an impact on the black community and the world at large.
The Nike Air VaporMax BHM acts as an ode to Olympic Hurdler Colin Jackson. On August 20, 1993, Jackson broke the world record in the 110m hurdles with a time of 12.91 seconds. Then, much later in his life at the age of 50, Jackson showed even more vigor by coming out as a gay man — a lifestyle wrongly frowned upon for athletes of his caliber. Because of his courageous and inspiring act, Nike has dedicated this VaporMax not only to his world record, but his strength as a human, as a gay man.
Colin’s commemorative Nike Air Max VaporMax BHM is set to release after the initial rollout of the BHM collection on January 15. Stay tuned for more details.
