Pharrell Williams has always been dialed into Japanese culture. Given his many brand affiliations and, of course, personal style, the region has clearly been a guiding sartorial light throughout his career.

For his upcoming Chinese New Year collection in honor of the Chinese zodiac, Williams — alongside adidas Originals — pays tribute to those musings through symbolism and cultural embellishments that are both focused and poignant.

By taking a new look at his Solar Glide Hu and the modern BYW silhouette, Williams uses color to speak a visual language that, in Chinese culture, represents fortune and happiness.

This is seen through subtle yet penetrating notions; the symbol seen at the Solar Glide’s upper is traditionally placed upside-down on the doors of Chinese homes in order to bring prosperity to the household. Both shoes ode not only the Chinese New Year but the impact Asian culture has had on Williams.

Look for his adidas Chinese New year Hu Pack on February 11 at select global Originals retailers.
