It’s been 50 years since Olympian Tommie Smith won gold in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. However, it’s what he did off the track that rewrote the record books and defined history.
Smith, as well as John Carlos, peacefully protested injustices against black Americans by raising their fists as the U.S. national anthem played during the award ceremony. Simultaneously, PUMA celebrates 50 years of excellence with its staple Suede silhouette.
As the historical event turns 50 on October 16th, PUMA is releasing its “PWR Thru Peace” collection that features the PUMA Suede donned in several different colorways and styles representing the five Olympic rings. The shoes also contain details that pay homage to Smith’s bid number, his medal-winning time and more.
PUMA SuedeAll profits from the sales of this collection will be donated to charities pursuing universal equality as part of PUMA’s #REFORM initiative which you can read more about here.
