Retro runners have had a monstrous year across all brands in 2014 including PUMA with its work on the PUMA Disc Blaze. Starting off the year, the German sportswear brand teamed up with KITH creator for a Parisian pop-up to debut the Ronnie Fieg x PUMA Disc Blaze “Coat of Arms”. The following month, PUMA teamed up with Foot Locker to open their first PUMA Lab shop in Atlanta that of course stocked the best from the brand including the Disc Blaze. Finishing the year off in a flashy way, they have dropped a reflective lineup featuring PUMA Disc Blaze “Reflective Pack”. The pack of PUMAs outfitted with reflective uppers includes classics like the Basket, XT1, and R698, but the Disc Blaze is definitely the feature piece.
The Disc Blaze receives the reflective treatment in places you wouldn’t normally expect given the nature of the materials. The midsole is painted with reflective touches from toe to heel, as well as the plastic cage around the shoes. Lastly, the mesh toe might deceive one when seeing them in day light, but PUMA placed reflective material underneath the mesh that pops through when light hits.
Despite a modern take on the runner that debuted in 1992, PUMA keeps a bit of heritage alive with a patterned sock-liner like seen on the OG releases as a subtle and respectful nod to their initial release. Currently, the shoe has only popped up at Japanese sneaker spots, but hopefully this Disc Blaze makes it Stateside. Sizes are limited at this point only being available up to a US 10 at Chapter Ex for ~$135US.
