While no word has come directly from Damian Lillard, his team, or adidas, it is being reported that the Portland point guard will opt out of his current sneaker deal. Lillard signed with adidas as a rookie coming out of Weber State, and was perhaps the brand’s most visible backer over All-Star Weekend, competing in six events while sporting the Three Stripes.
According to Comcast SportsNet, clever language in his contact gives Lillard the ability to opt out of his deal. This comes on the heels of winning Rookie of the Year and being voted an All-Star – all within his first season and a half. Opting out doesn’t necessarily mean that Lillard will in fact leave adidas, but it will create the opportunity for a bidding war that could make for a big payday from his current sponsor or a rival brand.
